My first Norton. Beware the low mileage Combat

Objects sacrificed for speed and ill fates?

Cowboy Don, Looks like left overs from the infamous slotted pistons, did it mess up much else after it came apart?

Daytona 2009 motor, rod bolt sheared when I was doing around 120 mph- it spat me off, knocked me out and I broke pieces off my T3 through T6 vertebrae. Watch the on board video of it. I holed a piston at Mid-Ohio last year racing in the 100+ degree heat but it just isn't that exciting looking. The bike lost a little power, I looked back and there was a plume of white smoke coming off me like I was a 747.
By the way, the holed case is a super thick and strong Steve Maney racing crankcase.

Our little mis mashes pale to the breaking up Doug delivers in howling horror. LIkely the show topper for this collection. McRae opens new category of objects sacrificed, X-rays MRI's and bloody boo boo photo's. Doug do you ever flash back on the images as life turned pear shaped so fast. Takes me about 3 yr after deer or 120 hi side on head to fully heal spine and flash backs.
Oh yeah how did ya determine rod bolt let go 1st, which I totally believe as was cause of my initial savable trash photo.

Biological distasteful to peek at but not gory sacrifices. http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2603677 ... 1179jLuuIW

This peeking too close to swinging a rachet wrench under rear fender, bonk!

When you examine the rod bolt, you can see where the crack began (darker) and where it finally sheared (lighter)- a little hard to see here.

Took the valve with it, into the depths of the crankcase.
I didn't end up rebuilding it myself, a friend offered to buy it so in a moment of weakness, I let it go. My friend has done an excellent job of restoring it though, and got Herb Becker to build the engine.

What happened to the nut?

He came off. At 120+mph no less.

Unrestored Trixie from New Orleans was taken down by a deer strike on 3rd wk timid riding, forks ruined and everything on RH of bike ground off on THE Gravel slide after it landed on me. Took his opportunity to re-store new forks and tank and drive train, gear box to new swing arm with spindle-collars. Then a 3 wk into timid riding again an original oil comma Combat piston let go but didn't injure the cases or crank or cam, just rod and piston. Months later new piston set and rod nuts but original rod bolts, one let go d/t corrosion working its was across metal grain fault like Doug found. That event took 3 yr to recover Trixie to present condition with JBW patching holed cases.
