The front brake on a race bike determines how fast you can ride. It is the most important tuning mod. My front brake is always one-finger operation regardless of whether it is a drum or discs. With disc brakes, getting the right pads is difficult these days. I needed to try a few different types. Commandos do not develop 200 BHP, so race pads often do not get hot enough.
I suggest that what some guys believe is a good brake, might be absurd. If you can grab a full handful of brake and hold it on while braking, it is not good enough.
The rear brake on my Seeley is cast iron. The only time I use it is when I am going wide in a corner and running out of road, and even then I use it very gently. Cast iron discs can explode off the bike. Ross Barelli was climbing off the back of the bike when he passed Mick Hone at the end of Conrod Straight at Bathurst. It did not help. If something gets inside your braking distance and you cannot turn, you are gone.
