Norton Wideline Frame

Hi Mike

I don't think its a orginal Wideline frame as they don't have a loop at the end for the gaurd, but other than that it look good, my Wideline frame is a 57 the orginal frames have the numbers stamped on the left hand side rear engine mount gusset like this 14
9
5
0

the 14 shows that it is a wideline frame and the other numbers are the frame numbers some have a letter stamped there as well to show which year they were made M means 1957, that how I knew mine was a 57.

Thanks Ash, he wants 1900 GBP for the lot, but i am just a lttle unsure after a couple emails from him if he is for real.
I dont want to part with the readies and get no frame.
Will email him about the back loop
Regards Mike

1900 for the lot is a good price, but the motor has no crank in it, its not a orginal Featherbed but has all the good gear, there are so many featherbed look a likes around these days, is the tank alloy or fibaglass.

You are right about the rear loop, however so many frames have been modified by now with the rear loop which was an accepted mod.
However, I cannot see from the pic if the rear suspension mount is a bolt on as was the original wideline, perhaps that too, has been modified :?:

That is not a true statement. Manx featherbed frames had the loop with the fender bracket on them. The street-bike frames are the ones that did not. So having a rear loop and bracket just means that it is either a Manx frame or one that someone made or modified to look like a Manx frame.

Mine is a orginal 1957 Wideline and it never had a loop on the end of the frame, I made my own loop and welded on the end of the frame to hold the rear gaurd, the slimlines had a bolt on loop as I am doing a 1960 Manxman up now.

No loop on my 59 as standard either, but it's been modified so now it has one.
Looking at the pics it looks like a new replica manx frame. (The rear tubes look like a smaller diameter than the standard road bikes) Nothing wrong with a new frame provided you can register it.
The price is pretty good, very good if those tanks are alloy!

The Minxes had a lighter rear frame. ( subframe / seat/ shock tubes )

Certain Individuals will tell you there roomier . looking at Vincent Twins in F'beds tens to validate this theory ,
the engine wont sit own / forward in the twin frames .

The Early Widelines had bolt on rear subframes .

Certain rear subframes were ' plug in ' and brazed , fitted aft of the shock mounts ; as a expedable replacement
sacrificial , as it were , so the rest doesnt bend if it / you swap ends and dissapear of the track backwards .

Used this ( 3/4 in. Dia. ) on the Triton , built from a snotted Commando frame and odds & ends .
Plenty of these ( bent Commando frames ) apparently .Still have the Drg. from it ( full size side view ).
Combined with a 68 odd Triumph swing arm & conical hub (aldgedly Manx copy in alumn.) Means it aint too hard

Getting a good authentic tanks the awkward bit, the 3 1/2 Gal. types the ' short circuit ' tank .
Still cant find the picture of John Cooper pulling a wheelie out of a corner on one ( 500 ) BOTHER.

Three series of 500s , the 61 being most appropriate to a Commando Powerplant .
