Norton Gearbox Cover Seal Upgrade (2010)

I'm trying the SKF 9815 seal upgrade but it's taking more time than I thought!

The gearbox cover came off easy, then I stripped the shifting parts and heated the case to drop the kickstart shaft bushing.

While that far into it why not change the pawl carrier o-ring and then sand out twenty years of dings on the case?

The seal was $5.50 out the door from my local NAPA store.

Amazing that the original o-ring was quite supple!
New single lipped seal on the left.

My cover is ready for polishing and mounting. I have not, however, addressed seals. Any updates on how various methods are holding out? We have everything from X-rings and metric O-rings, to full out machined in oil seals. Any information appreciated.

I have had great success with some drop in x-ring seals I purchased. One for the shift shaft and one for the kick shaft.
I have extra sets in stock shipped for $20 if anyone is interested.

Hi Sir,
I am very interested to buy X rings, one for shift shaft and other for the kick start.
Ciao.

The seal will last about 1 year or so then you'll do it again..........better than o-ring.
I wouldn't use red loc-tite though..

jezuz it took longer to put these pics on the forum that to do the job on the lathe I am useless with a PC
How can I get the whole pic in .I know LAB says not to go bigger than 800x600 but how?

To machine them on the lathe I put a big wooden plate on the mandrell, turn it flat ,fix a bit of wood on it in approx the middle with a woodscrew ,turn this exactly to the diameter of the kickstart, slde your cover over the now fitting bit of wood (pic1),turn to dia of you seal (pic1 also )and DONE

All royalties payable in single malt please
Very clever mate !!

I'd recommend that you add cNw to your research for upgrading the transmission's outer cover seals.

Best.

I plonked a square section ' O ' ring seal in mine for pennies off fleabay and it has been superb. I think it was a pack of 10. So 9 spares will outlive me ! Cannot remember the site but AMC kickstart seal was the search ?

Replaced the o-rings with x-rings and still had weepage at the k/s shaft. The 9815 seal cured it.

Set of seals on my outer gearbox now for several years , no seeping ... great , easy fix to clean up that area !
