NORTON 961 SE #107/200 - CANADA

Does the number on your fuel equate to its octane rating like ours does? 95 and 98?

It does, but USA/Canada pump fuel is numbered using the AKI = anti-knock index (RON + MON)/2 system, but many countries including the UK use RON numbers, so US 91 is approximately equivalent to UK 96 octane.

only with ethanol. ^^^ it makes a big difference in mileage and life of rubber pars in the FI system

Im a bit of a petrol novice, as we only have the 2 types of fuel, what does Ethanol do to the motor?

Basically ethanol is alcohol based that will dry out rubber whereas petroleum is oil based so does not dry out rubber. So that part is bad for plastic fuel tanks, like the Norton 961 and for FI systems with lots of plastic and rubber bits. As far as performance and such, not sure what it does but the Norton doesn't like it.

Alcohol effectively leans out the engine. It takes more alcohol by volume to run an engine than gasoline, for example, an engine that runs on 100% alcohol requires much larger jets (or injectors) than one on gasoline. Since the 961s are already running pretty lean for smog control reasons, the ethanol in the gas just makes it worse, besides destroying rubber and plastic parts over time.

Then, or am I just being thick, why sell it and what are its advantages?

Why sell it? Because its green, and we all know the world will melt in a fiery hell by the end of next month if we don't cos our governments say so, and they would never lie, would they?

What's its advantage? It's carbon neutral, not like that nasty stuff that comes from under ground. It puts out the same carbon, but its 'neutral' so that is obviously perfectly ok. So, what we do is cut down lots of CO2 consuming trees (but lets not mention that bit) and clear the land into a vast featureless landscape devoid of any habitat for wildlife, and take away vast acreage of land from food production (after all, there are no shortages in the world are there?) and plant stuff that can be turned into ethanol fuel. "Feed engines, not people" in other words.

Then we're all sorted and the planet is saved.

And anyone who argues otherwise is vilified, ridiculed and attacked.

Simples.

And it takes slightly more than one barrel of oil as an energy input to produce one barrel of oil equivalent energy product in corn based ethanol. Net product less than zero, much hype in the US about "energy independance" and reducing the need for foreign oil, however in fact the corn/ethanol subsidy has actually increased the need for oil from other sources.
The rather sudden increase in US Shale oil production ( fracking) has hidden this negative net output effect.

I didn't really know much about it. Just been reading up on it, we have E10, 10% ethanol, and will shortly be increasing to E15, which doesn't bode well....

I may ask Norton, as Ducatis seem to be badly affected in USA with their plastic tanks, plus any car or bike built more than 20 years ago, which is 3/4 of my garage....

The report I just read states that super unleaded - 97 octane, doesn't have ethanol in it at all, at PB and Esso, so Im going to use that exclusively, it might explain why the 961 ran better on it too.

I have tested BP , SHELL AND ESSO SUPER FUELS and all contain about 5% ethanol !but that is not to say it may vary in different parts of the UK.

Are there any countries that still use gas with lead on a regular basis? There is a place here on long island that sells leaded gas for old hot rods for a premium price. I haven't bought any yet, but I'm going to pick up a few cans worth for the old Bonneville.

NEW 961 TRIP PLANNED!!

My dad will be leaving Niagara Falls Canada on his 2013 961 SE and visiting the Birth Place of the 961, OREGON, in last 2 weeks of April, then heading up to BRITISH COLUMBIA for a bike show there. 3 weeks round trip.

Then of course going the INOA Rally 2015 in NC.

Your dad is hardcore, man. I'm probably going to retire this year, so you tell him I'm inspired.

I'm in Oregon, near Portland. It'd be great to connect with him when he comes through here. I think I have the only British 961 in Oregon so far and it'd be fun to see his SE and go for a ride.

I will share this with him -- Thank you!. He turns 64 in April.
