Hello there

I am located in Germany, riding, repairing and racing Norton twins for over 25 years now. I am self employed for 15 years now, restoring, repairing british bikes - mainly Norton twins and HRD/Vincent twins. Occasionally a BSA or Triumph needs my work too.
I was for years monitoring this Commando board and the other britbike Forum. Recently I couldn´t get into the britbike forum any more - tried on three different computers. Contacted Dave Comeau (moderator of the Norton bulletin board) and he suggested I contact Morgan@britbike.com which I did but my mail comes back. As it would be nice to log in again and study the posts I seek advice of how to get into the britbike forum again. My PC is 1/2 year old and the rest of the internet works just fine. My PC wizzard tried to get into the forum as well but couldn´t find out why it doesn´t work....If any of the britbike forum users read this I would be pleased to hear that they contact one of the moderators on my behalf and let him know that the forum is not accessible here in Germany. Maybe they could do something about it.

Now the Commando bit: I´m in the process of developing a bit more power of the Commando engine. So far I have made steel flywheels with special aligned bolts that make the crank far stronger and safer at high revs. Next piece is a camfollower with much improved weight and without that soldered HSS plate at the bottom. Cams, pistons and conrods are already designed and will be made in the next few weeks. At the moment I am working on the combustion chamber and track design of the head. In the next few weeks the first engine will go on the dyno.
Here is my homepage: www.britishclassicbikes.de
At the moment there are no pictures of that new Norton stuff but as soon as it all works I will put pics on the page.

Cheers

Hartmut

Welcome aboard! I think your internet problem is with your browser. I had a similar problem with my mac computer running safari for my browser. I couldn't access Steve Maney's site and everyone else could. I contacted my server who pushed the blame back on safari. Through the apple web site I found out how to clear out the garbage from the system (and where to find it). It's been working fine ever since.

I look forward to seeing your cranks, cam followers and any other performance parts you are producing.
Nice bikes on your web site. I only wish I could speak your language.

Try installing the Firefox browser. I have had better luck with it than Safari or Internet Explorer.

Thanks folks

I installed the Firefox and so far it works - maybe there is something wrong with my Explorer...

This evening I had a meeting with my CAD specialist - he is converting the CAD constructions into CNC programs so next week we should have a rod and maybe a piston.

Anybody having a 6-speed TT gearbox from Australia in use? I am very interested to hear how it performs. Would save me a lot of time if that box works perfectly - wouldn´t need to design and make my own.

In the next few days I will put a couple pics on my homepage about my Dunstall project bikes. I built three frames of the "drainpipe" type last winter and hope to have at least two of them ready for next year. As the bike is so low and slim I guess a 900cc engine and a 6-speeder will make it a real flyer.
Until the 905 is ready I put a 750 big valve in - but the 4-speeder is a pain as I always try for another gear ....

Cheers

A few of us with Dunstall 810's would be interested in 810 pistons, they seem hard to get.

Your efforts in translating will be appreciated.

Hi Hartmut,

welcome aboard and hello from Frankonia (Würzburg)!

Cheers,

Absolutely!

i artmut,

I know several people who are using TTI gearboxes, and all say that they are an excellent gearbox....however, a 6 speed might be a bit of overkill on a Norton, as it has more torque. The people who use them on big twins only use a 5 speed!! (Gary Thwaites, Keith Richardson etc!!)

The NEW quaife from Mick Hemmings is very good also and about 2kg lighter.

Well - I would like the 6-speeder. I put a 5speed in a customers twin - I liked it but I think another gear wouldn´t be a disadvantage - the prices don´t differ much so why not go for 6-speeds. On the other hand I would like to have an extra sturdy box for my outfit. TTI sells a seemingly strong 4speed as well - so I might order two or three boxes in the end. If the 905 (80 x90) stays in one piece on the dyno I will put the first engine into the Wasp outfit. And that would surely kill the std box despite the quicker ratio of my primary.

Today I got the first drawings of piston and rod. The piston is very lightweight: 191 gr the aluminium (says the computer). The rings are another 12 gr and the very short and stiff pin shouldn´t be more than 45gr - will give a complete piston with around 250gr - not bad.

It seems to me (by memory) the stock 750 commando pistons by themselves are 250 gr. Are your steel cranks significantly lighter?

No - the 750 piston complete with rings, pin, circlip is around 342 gr (std 73mm dia) - the 850 (77mm dia) is around 410gr. As we are building a 905cc engine with 80mm bore the weight reduction is significant compared to the std Norton stuff. If there is demand for 750/850 pistons and rods I could do this as well. They will be a bit less than 250 gr - so a std Norton will vibrate less.
The crank is around 1,5 kg lighter. The steel conrods should be about the same weight as the std aluminium rods. (450gr) So the oscillating weight of upper rod end and piston is a bit less than stock and should smooth the vibes. Next project is an oilpump that bolts straight in and has double output - I´d like to flush the head to get some heat out and have jets in the crankcase that squirt oil directly under the pistons to cool the domes. The pump will have a ball valve in the pressure side in front of the crank so all wetsumping should be gone forever as the feed and return pumps are sealed in between.

Cheers
