They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, just not in the case of Mk3 starter motors.... To say that someone has 'stolen your design' is a strong statement. If the design of whatever had a valid patent then yes, the statement holds true. At the end of the day these are quite simple electric motors.
I converted a NOS harley starter years ago and have been doing them, a few a year since then. I found out CNW sold what looks like the exact same conversion. I was not in anyway put out. I did my conversion by first using the four pole frame from a 5780BN harley replacement and used the prestolite internals (works but could be better) I then machined up a new drive end plate and altered the harley rotor to suit the commando so taking all the 5780 bits i had a 'new' four pole starter. I did all this by myself, unaware of the CNW version of the 5780BN.
Getting to the matter of how much this all costs is where this get people wobbly.
A CNW 5780 converted starter motor is $539. The Harley 5780 BN can be bought for as little as $70 on ebay and that is the item sold to joe public. The trade price for these starters would be in the region of $50
The Dyno dave/WOSP/HNW/Norvil/RGM types are based on a nippon denso. Whoever converts them will buy them in as cheap as possible, convert to commando spec, and then punt them out for as much as they think they can, without pricing themselves out of the market. An earlier post in this thread alluded to that fact 'the price was suggested by the members of the norton.com forum' Obviously WOSP could see a market for doing their conversion at a much lower price.
At the end of the day you pay your money and make your choice.
Personally i like the look of the prestolite/5780BN motor over the DD/WOSP types. I think they look like they have come off a washing machine.
