can someone tell me what holds the chrome trim ring and headlight to the bucket on a 66? the previous owner must have lost everything and decided to silicone it all together. i found a screw and little plate in my parts book and found them online. is that all there is, seems like there should be some spring clips or something but dont see them in the parts book.

Yes that's it. There should be a raised lip on the metal headlight shell, the metal plate has a bent tab on it which when screwed tight holds the rim. Common practice on most British bikes of that era.

There should be several spring clips to hold headlight to chrome rim.

One more thing .... IIRC, there is a tab at 6 o'clock that enters a slot. The bent tab described by Bernhard is at 12 o'clock.

The screw that tightens up the bent tab, was originally a chrome plated screw with a straight slot.
I found the screw slot easily became boggered up, and was hard to engage while holding the rim/light assembly with one hand and trying to tighten with the other. Unless you are a purest, replacing the original screw with a socket head capscrew makes life easier.

They can be easily formed from music (spring) wire. My guess is 0.040 dia wire. I can measure tomorrow if you want to try making your own. I can also pop one out and post a tracing of it.

Any British parts supplier should have them

As Slick and LAB said, you can make them ot buy them at most any Norton parts dealer.

But, just to be clear, these clips secure the lighting unit to the chrome rim and are not involved with securing this assembly to the headlight shell (i.e. the large black or chrome mammary shaped thing).
