My son is gonna need a lawyer in Cheyenne

Well let's all hope that the lad makes a full recovery, for his sake, and all the families sake.
We Aussies squeal like pigs when the Registration renewal arrives in the post.
Luckily, it includes "compulsory third party" cover.
The "third party", being the person hit by another.
All the best xbskt, hope all goes well.

First, I hope your son's recovery is without complication. Before I did anything I would talk to his insurance company as to what they recommend and find out what they may or may not do for you. If he has uninsured motorist coverage (most companies now include it as manditory just for this reason) then they may cover a lot more than vehicle damage. Sadly, the money spent on a lawyer may be just more money wasted if the driver that caused the accident has nothing of value to attach. My wife was rear-ended by an uninsured motorist a few years back. All that resulted from it was that the motorist at fault was arrested for drunk driving and had to go to rehab. Since they were then without a job and their vehicle was totalled there was really nothing my wife could get in monitary renumeration. It sucks but it may be the case here as well. My wife's insurance did pay her medical bills but time off from work was on sick leave.

Before I hired a lawyer I might retain a private investigator to find out something about the offender. Regardless, I would be quick about any action as snakes have a way of disappearing into the grass.
