And.. what kind of grey paint is used in the various parts like the triple crown and fender brackets?[/quote]
I use epoxy enamel in a spray can. Rust guard type stuff from the local hardware. Doesn't require undercoat and is as hard as nails when dry. Look for aluminium colour.
I use the black also for small bits and pieces.

I look at the work you have done and just say to myself, "This old guy knows what he is doing". I used to know what I was doing but now I just walk around mumbling. Carry on then, and share.

Thanks for the compliment but i'm only in my early forties, lol.

Jerry, I was looking at the pics of your restoration in your photo album and I was blown away. You set the bar high and I will do my best to achieve that level. Your bike is beautiful.

I would like to make it to Sturgis this year but am not sure yet if it is realistic, well see.

FYI The zener belongs in the Z bar. Dissipates excess current to ground. If you put a charger on the bike and leave it the z bar will get warm.

UPDATE,
Lots of work going on over the winter.
-Undersized rod journal to .010'. Installed new fasteners on crankshaft
-Since i only had 0.0002' taper in the cylinders I put a new crosshatch in there with new standard piston rings.
-Bead blasted and painted cylinders with high heat paint
-Installed new crank bearings and found that I needed shims for proper crankshaft end play( that took a while ) Now have .010'
-Refaced cam followers and had to buy new cam because hardening was dissapearing quick.
- Cleaned and removed rust on all fasteners and sent for Cadmium coating
-Polished a lot of aluminum.
-Fitted oil tank and welded new rear support.

Went to install timing gears and oil pump yesterday and remembered that I forgot to order the keyway on the crankshaft. Maybe next weekend i'll get the timing cover on"

This weeks mission.
-rebuild rear hub and brake drum
- rebuild front forks with progressive springs, all new bushings and fork tubes.
Oh yeah, get that keyway from local parts store.

Next weeks mission
Head should be back from machine shop. may get to finish engine???
starts on transmission

Gosh if we could all just get similar riding time in compared to quality fettering time it'd all make better sense. Stealing time is all we got so thanks for spending some on us.

Are you sure this is a 1973 850?

1973 had a basketweave pattern on the seat and the cylinder barrels were silver. 1974 went back to black barrels and a ribbed seat similar to 1972.

All I know is that the serial number plate says March of 1973. Maybe the spec were different in Canada. Your brochure says USA on it.

It's a roller, that's a milestone.

The tranny frame is notched/cut out so you can get the tranny installed with the power unit in place, right?

I forget on which year models that becomes an issue...

Yeah I checked. All I have to do is loosen the rear engine mounts. Still have to put new bushings in the transmission.
