mounting tires - inner rim rust -- tips and tricks...

I went to change a tyre (new roadrider mk2) on my 750 Bonneville a few weeks back. The original Dunlop rim had been rechromed about 20 years ago and I had trouble then finding a chromer who would do rims due to the inaccessible rim cavity. When I put the levers on the rim the top chrome plate came off in sheets!
I made the decision to lace on a new stainless Devon rim and I'm very happy with the result, but can't help thinking that some rust convertor (or even/+ ACF50 or XCP ?) would have extended the life of that irreplaceable rim? I think I'll give all the other brit bikes the same treatment come next tyre change.

I understand exactly what you said, and as I said, it's the rust you can't see.... here's a pic of my homemade "hypo rust inhibitor injection device". I talked some nurses out of a bunch of these when I was in the hospital having a knee replacement. they are some sort of flush syringe but those common red aerosol spray tubes fit perfectly in the end. on my front rim, I pumped about 5 or 6 vials full of ospho rust converter it into each side of the rim. rotated the rim until the stuff was running out all over the place. I was fairly confident the inner surfaces were well covered. hopefully it will extend the life of my originals - if not for me, for the next guy -
