Ok, I went back to the drawing board, or in my case the cardboard. I happened to have a strip of 3/16 or 1/8 in aluminum. I cut it down and drill some holes.
The neat part about this is that I used the existing hole in the battery box by sandwiching the parts together. It's very rigid and uses as few parts as I can. And the aluminum will provide a little addition heat dissipation.
I'll replace the upper two bolts with button heads to finish it off nicer and leave less sharp edges in the battery compartment.
It doesn't touch anything, and it's still in the air flow. Phew. At least some good news tonite.
