Country flag
Went for a ride about 2 weeks ago, and for the first hour, bike runs great. Suddenly bike starts to buck, backfire, pop, lose power and die. First thought was I was running out of gas, but had plenty. Battery completely dead- 9 A/H gel that was from the previous owner. I let the bike sit for a while, then it fired up and while still running poorly, got me home.
Next thought was dirty carbs. After reading about the Amal premiums, I installed a set on the bike. Most likely nothing to do with the above problem, but I was going to do this anyway. After appropriate adjustment including the left & right airscrew adjustment, bike idles nicely at 1000, which it didn’t do consistently before. Had the battery on a charger, so I took the bike out for a test run- again-same crappy running.
Next thought was the battery (again, going to have to do that anyway), so I got a new gel 14 A/H, installed it, took a run and didn’t get much past the driveway. Again, bike was idling perfectly, although was more difficult than usual to start. While idling, I pulled the left cylinder lead and it appears that the right cylinder was running normally and could accelerate past idle smoothly. Not the same on left cylinder- when right lead removed, engine began backfiring and popping on acceleration.
Checked plugs – left cylinder dark and sooty, right cylinder less so. Will replace the plugs when I get home tonight. Current plugs are NGKBP7ES, want to replace with Champions, but not sure if I need the N7YC or the RN7YC- it has Boyer ignition.
Any thoughts? I’m generally competent taking things apart and putting them together again, but diagnosis isn’t my strong point on this bike-yet. Any help is appreciated.

Hi wjrich
Personally I would stick with NGK plugs(not positive but I think BP8ES form memory), but yes first thing is to put 2 new ones in, if issue persists, swap the HT leads over if the misfiring transfers with the lead you know its the lead. Check the connections on the coils (unlikely as they work in series if 6V). Then it could be coils swap those over and see if issue swaps sides with the coil (mark them before swapping then you don't lose track of which is which)
Come back after that for more info.
My best guess is plugs! although I am usually wrong!
John

(edit. BP7ES are correct,)

If original type coils, then I suspect the left one may be bad. Check wires first. It's been a long time, is Boyer a wasted spark unit? If so, just swap leads as suggested to test. If not then you can swap coils. Simple enough.

FWIW that 14ah is proper.

Yes to above testings but also unscrew and pull off the points cover (the round bump in front of the word Norton) and wiggle the 2 wires that connect with the plate electronics. See if the connection is solid and not cominng apart from vibration. Use the forum search function to fix this known issue. Good luck.

Amazing, but $5 worth of spark plugs solved the problem. Screwed them in, bike fired in 2 kicks and settled into a nice even idle. Took a brief ride, and it's like the problem never occurred. As diagnosed by Ed Zender in a phone call, battery probably wasn't getting the charge it needed. Voltage dropped below the Boyer minimum, and the one cylinder started to misfire. Misfire fouled the plug, so even after replacing the battery bike wouldn't run properly with the fouled plug. New plugs, new carbs, new battery all needed anyway.
Thanks all for the help.

Welcome to British bikes, first rule, always carry a spare plug and socket!
I would recommend you spend a bit more on Iridium plugs BPR7EXI you will notice the difference and keep the pair that's in as spares.
Glad it was something simple
Enjoy :D
