I have one of those common Commando problems with my MK3 : the side stand lug is missing. I have tracked down a good original stand and all fittings except of course for the lug that seems to have somehow managed to neatly snap itself off the frame rail.. There is no damage to the rail and only the smallest amount of weld left from the once present lug.. Is there anyone who makes a replacement lug for a MK3 and how does one determine exactly at what angle and where to have it welded ?

Could someone help me with a lug from badly damaged frame ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated :D

Have a great easter
Paul ..

Can't help with sourcing the lug - but they are only a chunk of 1/2" or so shaped steel plate, with a hole drilled in it.

Its unusual for them to snap off like that ?
They usually take a section of frame tube out with them.
And wear out of shape, and in the hole.

Once you source, or make the lug, when you weld it in back there, there is really only one angle where the sidestand will fold up neatly.
If you try it for fit with the sidestand attached to it, get the angle right so it folds in and out and avoids the exhaust and everything,
and tack it there it should be good to fully weld with the stand then removed.
Thats how I did it, anyway. Easy to do if you say it fast.

Disconnect the electrix BEFORE doing any welding....

Could measure or photo the lug shape (on a Mk2, doubt they'd be too different ?) if you don't get any lug sources.
Be surprised though, it was a common wear point.

Thanks for everyone's help on my MK 3 broken side stand lug ..
I have contacted Old Britt's and hopefully I will hear from them soon ..

Cheers

The lug from Old Britts will sure work.

Procedure is key here. It is good you have the stand already. You will want to take care in positioning the bracket. Get as close as the diagrams and template will allow and then tack it in a couple spot. Mount you stand (no need for the spring yet) and check how it sit extended and the more important part on how it retracts, particularly where the bump stop hits the frame. It's a bitch when it just misses sticks under the frame tube. You have get off and fish the damn thing out just to use it.

The template is good but ever so slightly off will make it not sit right when retracted.

Note that in the pic there, that lug is only lightly tack welded.

For real, they have/need a solid run of weld top, bottom, and each side.
Lotta force feeds through that lug....

Great point.
Yes, from every possible angle and area that will not impede function.

You shouldnt look a Gift Horse in the Mouth . :)

You can Fit P. R. pipes that fit against the frame rail up inside the chaincase inner outer flange , ( if the fit with the Mk III chaincase  )
this'd give you yards more ground clearance , for if youre into drifting round the outside of the hondas into the bends .

seriously , on the pre Mk III you have to whip the lug of to fit these pipes , unless its the one INSIDE the frame rail .
