Hi

Very very slowly building up the parts for the 960 race engine. Thought you might like to see what I do to pistons :D

Eddie asked me what I am doing this season, well not a lot. Missed all last season & this year does not look good.

Me and pistons

The other piston is also knackered front & back. I have damage to the pump/drive gears & a large piece of stellite missing from a follower.
Pistons were JE 81mm. As yet I dont know if the barrel can be saved but the head just needs a clean.

I was going to nick the 750 engine but Ellis has made new gears for the 4 speed Quaife  I probably will still do this if I want to get out this year.

I've got a collection of pistons that look like that Chris!

Glad to see you are making progress matey.

Please keep us updated...

Gosh Chris looks like you took up Burt Munroe's hobby of collecting sacraficed parts for the shear thrill of it. Curious to know what ya think let go first. Might consider studying the piston oil resivour texture article that JMS and I are experimenting with. Also consider cyro tempering to try to hang togther longer. At a Barber event Cummmings almost didn't race d/t the TS pinion cog loosing teeth so found an Altas pinon in the swap meet which fit perfect but was ~1/16" wider more robust that Cdo verision. I'm eviousn of the pull you must get whacking open a lightened 960.

Ouch! Do you have any idea what caused it? Almost looks like it melted through top land.

Hi Ken

The piston has melted. The Corillo rod is a different colour to its companion. I have not looked at the jounals yet but I suspect the oil pump has failed. The chipped threads on the drive nut are very odd. Cant tell if the main bearing failed. Once again on the trail of some pistons but I need to know if the barrel can be saved. Loved this engine but it maybe sometime before it see's the light of day again. Not many people local with the skills to tell me what can be salvaged, might need a trip to Norman.

all the best Chris
