Lucas headlight with a modern halogen bulb?

Is it possible to get a 7" Lucas headlight that you can put a modern halogen bulb into? I'm referring to the glass headlight itself, not the chrome shell.
 
I have used auto head lights for many years here in the US(about 7.00). But yes Lucas made an H-4 Halogen with a pilot bulb. (about 70.00) for the current re-mans. Stan at Rocky Point can find them for you. lots of H-4's without pilot lights....
 
I also have tried auto sealed beam halogens, but find the light pattern is not the optimum for motorcycles and find the 7" reflector for an H4 bulb made for motorcycles much superior.

As Gregg says Stan can help. Also Cibie makes a reflector that will take the parking bulb as well. These can be obtained from Daniel Stern http://www.danielsternlighting.com/products/products.html.

I have a Lucas H-4 reflector, but when I mounted it I was dismayed to find that it aimed the beam to the left. It seems they were only designed for the home market, so be careful if you are offered one of these. (Driving on the left :roll: :lol: ).

I also have a Bosch H-4 reflector on my bevel drive Duck, but I'm not sure these are still available and they have no parking light provision.
 
I have a 60watt in my bike. Lights up the night. I actually swapped the front lens too for the vintage pattern- just work carefully and glue(caulk) it back on.
 
There is also a Wipac H-4 light unit with pilot bulb hole drop in replacement for the original Lucas light unit. Bought mine in the 80s. At the time I got it Lucas did not have one.
 
Non H4 reflectors are assuredly not recommended with H4 bulbs. Totally different light spread. I bought a fairly cheap aftermarket one online - $14 I think? - works a treat with a good H4 bulb. Lighting NOT a problem now (bulb is on a relay, and I run the Sparx three-phase alternator).

Worthwhile mods.
 
I've used a regular automotive halogen sealed beam for years with great success and are readily available at the parking lot of choice without having to open the hood.( :oops: )
 
To clarify, I'd like to get a headlight made by Lucas that says "Lucas" on it. I want to restore the bike with all the Lucas--dare I say, crap--that originally came with the bike. I've replaced the tail light, the turn signals, etc., and this is the last Lucas part I need. Since I want modern headlight functionality, I was wondering if you can get an OEM Lucas headlight that will accept a modern bulb. And since I want jam on it an' all, I'd like to get the Lucas headlight made for countries that drive on the "right" side of the road. :arrow: :mrgreen:
 
BTW, I forgot to mention that it sounds like the H-4 will fit the bill :?:
 
A few years ago I bought a socket and bulb at the local auto parts store. The bulb socket fit fairly snuggly in the existing Lucas lens socket, and I secured the edge with electrical tape. The bullet connectors from the original Lucas socket plugged right in. 50/65 W halogen, original Lucas lens, whole cost about $10.
 
As has been pointed out by BrianK, the non-halogen reflector lens will give a different pattern. I would not expect to be much better than the stock bulb.

If originality is what you want, stick with the non-halogen. It is original :wink:

It is easy to swap out the stock and halogen reflectors. You might want to buy a halogen relfector and auto-type pigtail and just swap in the stock relfector and pigtail for "show". It would take less than 2-minutes.

I'm afraid finding a US-spec Lucas halogen reflector would be rarer than the proverbial hen's tooth.
 
Unfortunately, Mike, those are like the one I have and are for left-hand drive. Huffer is looking for one that will work in the 'States.

I think Ron L means they're for right-hand drive vehicles that drive on the left.

LHD usually refers to left hand dip - see dip direction arrow on glass, which has been a compulsory 'Euro' marking for many years now, however the eBay items listed above by fin_du_monde look like RH dip items for left-hand drive vehicles, as some people appear to refer to RHD & LHD as being right or left hand drive which is misleading.

LHD, Left Hand Drive, Left Hand Dip...It's too confusing for me! :?
