lets not confuse the issue with facts - we all know if it cost more it must be better

For years I thought that higher octane fuel meant higher powered fuel. In fact it has become part of the lexicon- as in- he or she is "high octane" , meaning hight energy. We ve probably all heard oldtimers talk of getting 5 more miles per gallon with premium fuel than with regular in a car that is designed to run on regular. This claim is a myth.

I was quite surprised to learn that low octane regular pump gas has more energy per gallon than high octane premium does. The octane is an anti knock agent, needed to prevent pre-ignition in higher compression engines.
Only use as high an octane fuel as you need, going higher in octane only costs more, it does nothing to add power, in fact it saps a small amount away.

I quit racing 5 years ago, but at all the tracks I raced at there was always a pump with leaded 110+ octane fuel available for my racebikes. Has this changed?

Guys I need some assistance reading my plugs. I took her for a spin today and she rode much better with the pump gas but I'm still getting hesitation around 4k RMP... it works through the RPMs and is great after 5500RPM. I cut the engine in the middle of the sputtering and had look at the plug. The ceramic is still white. The base of the threads is black along the rim. The ground electrode is white/tan. Thanks Guys!

Yep looks about what ya might expect on new age pump gas with some mis firing to leave soot from un burnt fuel. The wide thermal stain on the electrode may mean spark timing jumping around in the 5000 rpm range. it reveals nothing on why its mis firing rough running at upper mid range power zone. Plug indicates fuel close enough not to run rough there, just not as powerful as mixture dialed dead on, once regularly ignited in time or need.

Well, I dropped the Main Jets on the JS Carbs from 150 to 142's and it runs MUCH better. No hesitation whatsoever. Went for a one hour ride and had a blast. I pulled into the garage and didn't even bother pulling the plugs to check.... It's always a good day riding the Norton when you are not fixing something that broke on the ride, or trying to fine tune something.... it just worked. Very Happy. :D
