Large number of bikes in convoy

On Sunday (22 Aug 2010) we were driving our motorhome between Ellensburg and Vantage (Eastern Washington). On the long descent into Vantage we saw an enormous procession of motorcycles, all running two abreast in the fast lane. The seemed to be escorting an 18-wheeler and the tractor part of a second one. I would estimate maybe 250 bikes.

Unfortunately, the two halves of the highway there are too far apart for me to read the banners on the trucks, particularly as I was fighting about 60-knot winds in a big wheeled box (32' Class A MH).

Does anyone know what it was all about?
 
Seriously, I heard there was a huge biker protest of the mosque this last Sunday.
 
Sounds funny either way. Probably that ridiculous group of HD riders that call themselves the patriot riders.
 
Assuming the Mosque protest was in NYC, they were headed the wrong way, and , since it was already about noon Sunday, they'd have had to get a hell of a move on to do 3000 miles back there! I don't think they were all Harleys, either, but the majority were. The comment about "Patriot Riders" may have some truth to it, as many were flying the US flag.
 
If you mean "Patriot Guard", I disagree that the group is 'ridiculous', and also disagree that they are all HD riders, although many are.

That is the group and it's ok to disagree about stuff like that. I just don't care for that type of people and the few showings I've seen of them I liked even less in real life. To each his own.
 
I guess it's all relative.

They were formed to serve as a "shield" (from the whacko protesters) for the families at military funerals.

I'd much rather see the PG riders than the protesters, personally.
 
I apologize for mentioning the guard and my take on it. This isn't the place to start an international political thread and I don't want anyone to get bent about it.
 
I'd still like to know what drew so many bikers to that rather desolate section of westbound I-90 on Sunday. It was a very impressive turn-out. As I said, the east-bound and west-bound sections of I-90 were too far apart for me to read the banners.

Maybe I should post on a HOG website also.

I'd have thought that someone would have known why so many bikes were in such a desolate area of Washington that day. I might never know!
