What is the secret in installing this filter? Do you have to remove the oil tank?

The oil filter kit is installed underside of engine .... I have ‘72 and had to purchase a filter kit , install it and then install the oil filter on filter head provided as part of the kit .... hope this helps I use the hi-flo 153 on mine , some say K&N may have issues with welded on bottom removal nut ....

Marc. Did you ever get an answer to your question about installing the oil filter kit? I ask because I’m in the same situation with my ‘72 Combat engine.

I believe the question was about a K&N air filter.

There's no need to remove the oil tank to fit the oil filter kit.

I have ‘72 also fitted “oil filter kit” by following instructions that were included with the kit ....as I recall very straight forward ...

Yes, it is about the air filter. Of course, all the OEM air filter HW needs to be removed. K&N filter is even more compact than OEM, so there was plenty of room. Oil tank is different with 70 and earlier Commandos, so I have no experience to add about early Commandos. You'll need to do something with the oil tank vent that was piped into the OEM air filter. Either vent to the air or pipe into K&N. I used a kitchen sink faucet rinser hose and drilled a hole in rear of K&N filter. Same ID as vent hose and has a plastic tip that fits snuggly into rubber of filter. Even looks trick with clear vinyl with nylon webbing.

This is my K&N air filter (part number NO-0100) inside the stock ham can housing. I can muscle it in and out between the front and rear plates With the perforated surround outside the K&N.

I still don't know if he's talking about the element for the stock can above, or the dual snorkel that does away with the Ham can.

Previous post had KN part num 0100 which is the hamcan filler type. Ive got that on my bike but tend to leave the grille off as it does make R&R difficult.
There was a thread months back about finding a slimmer version of KN and cutting down the grille to give better clearance. RGM sell a slimmer hamcan with their own paper element, but having to special order a disposable element from UK didn't appeal.

I find the paper filter is more delicate and cannot be muscled in without damage. The K&N goes in...from the right sift...moving it about until it goes where it belongs. The surround prevents the filter from collapsing when tightening the two 7/16” bolts.
