Is there any way to drain the gearbox on an early 850 Commando without removing the cover? I just want to remove the 90 wt. and replace with Redline MTL.

Why do you need to remove the (outer/inner?) cover/s? Is there some reason why you can't you use the gearbox drain plug?

Yes, use the drain plug!

BTW, MTL is great in the primary, but I'd suggest Redline Shockproof Heavy for the gearbox (which is, however, a GL-5 lube, if you worry about such things - Redline also makes some GL-4 products - see their website). - BrianK

I am using MTL because of the GL4 GL5 issue. I understood that GL5s were no good in the older trannys. I am currently running GTX 20/50 in the primary but plan to switch to ATF soon. On the gearbox, I mistook the drain plug for the level port but I guess that there usually is not a drain plug on the primary.

Are you certain you were looking at the right plug?

Drain plug shown here (although the hexagon is larger than the standard drain plug):

The GL5 story is an old wives tail, change your oil to redline at the correct service interval.
