Is My 71 Roadster a Factory Bastard?

It shouldn't be worn like that, but most are. The speedo gearbox is made of pot metal and bends easily, plus if the tophat washer gets crushed it tends to push the gearbox into the hub cover. The gearbox should not touch the hub cover. You can bend the area of the gearbox out around the tophat so it doesn't touch the hub cover. That can happen from over torque or just plain mis-assembly or worn parts. Wouldn't hurt to have a spare tophat washer for the gearbox.

I was just looking through the manuel to compare the pre and post 71 set up. I was wondering if the pre 71 hub on a post 71 axel was the problem. From the pictures I really couldn't determine if the spacer arrangement was the same or different.

I am considering my options of either keeping my current hub/drum arrangement or replacing it with the cush drive hub and drum.

After doing a search on the cush drive hubs they appear to be more trouble than they are worth.

I would really like to hear about the advantages and disadvantages of this shock absorber drive system.
