Is it wrong to assume all gearboxes after serial number 325000 are Mk3?

The gearbox on my MK2 is numbered 326066, making it the 1,066th gearbox in the Mk3 sequence of serial numbering. However, this gearbox is clearly a right-side shift.

Should I assume someone modified this 'box, or consider that it may have left the factory with a right side shift (unlikely I think...)? If modified, is this as simple as the outer cover and selected guts within?

Huge thanks and excuse my ignorance - just do not know much about the Mk3 model.

Probably, all that's needed to convert a Mk3 gearbox to right-foot operation is the pre-Mk3 inner and outer covers and pre-Mk3 ratchet parts.

<---That has a Mk III box with rhs.

The likely explanation is that your Mk2 g/b shell developed a crack or a gear cluster fault, and was replaced by a second hand Mk3 gearbox. Maybe a PO even fancied having a neutral indicator! If originality is important to you, I have a Mk2 g/b shell surplus to requirements.
