Did a box stock 1974 Interstate come with steel side covers?

Mine has fibreglass side panels. To my knowledge it is original
Thanks for the reply. I am really hoping that the pair that I ordered off EBay are steel.Do you know what years came with the steel ones? I know they are out there.
Thanks again,Mike

My 74 Roadster came with steel but am trying to get a set for an Interstate

I had fibre-glass on my very early MK2a Interstate but got steel replacements in the 80's which were not MK3 (which are very close but need adjusting) but proper MK2a so that suggests they moved to steel mid 74 model year.

I got a steel set unpainted from RGM. They seem to have them in stock.

They needed a bit of minor fettling but OK. The left one still needs a bit of adjustment.

The '74 Interstate (5/74) I recently acquired with 13,000 miles and in storage for over 20 years has
steel side covers. I have no reason to think they are not originals.

My experience 73 and up should be steel for roadster or interstate, my 73 interstate, my 74 and my 74mk2a interstates and my 75s all are steel. My mid year production 72s bought new both have glass for bodywork.

The '74 Interstate 850 that I bought back in the late '70s came stock with steel side covers.

So,,, why do some LH steel side covers have that rectangular depression in the lower rear corner? Mine does but I note @johnm doesn't.

The 850 Mk1A/Mk2A Roadster and Interstate LH covers had the depression (and hole) for the Dzus fastener.
(The 850 Mk3 Interstate cover also had the depression but not the hole)

Best I can tell, in 73 it depended on 750/850, model, and color whether they were fiberglass or steel (most 850 steel). For 74 I haven't found anything definitive but I'm, thinking all steel. Now, how does the seller know it is from a serial number high enough to be 74?

See this for what for what I think today: https://www.gregmarsh.com/MC/Norton/CommandoColors.aspx

My '72 Combat Interstate had fibreglass panels, and my '73 MkIIA Interstate (recessed for Dzus fastener) also had fibreglass panels
Edit - see LAB's post above - that's my MkIIA :)

And another fibreglass panel but LH only, from a late (3210xx) Nigerian Mk2A.

My early MK2a was fitted with fibre glass, one scenario is that when the panel shape changed such as the MK1/2a rear depression for the dsuz fastener the press tool for the steel pressings would be on a long lead time for changes to the die. So they used fibre glass as an interim until the press dies caught up and then changed to steel.

The "A"s add a wrinkle. (I'm probably all wet). I think they had the bottom dzus since due to the different battery carrier/air box. My mid MK2A came with steel according to the 2nd owner, but the bottom bracket broke and the cover was lost. He switched to a non-A cover with a welded on lower bracket so he couldn't lose another. The oil tank covers is steel and supposedly original.

My 74 Interstate was built Dec 73 but sold in Canada as 74 (RH10 head)
Steel Tank but Glass side covers. I changed to steel side covers when I repainted the Tank.
