Thanks for the reply. I am really hoping that the pair that I ordered off EBay are steel.Do you know what years came with the steel ones? I know they are out there.Mine has fibreglass side panels. To my knowledge it is original
Where did you get the modified OEM style airbox. Nice bike!!I got a steel set unpainted from RGM. They seem to have them in stock.
They needed a bit of minor fettling but OK. The left one still needs a bit of adjustment.
Hi. It's home made to fit the CNW electric start.Where did you get the modified OEM style airbox. Nice bike!!
So,,, why do some LH steel side covers have that rectangular depression in the lower rear corner?
My '72 Combat Interstate had fibreglass panels, and my '73 MkIIA Interstate (recessed for Dzus fastener) also had fibreglass panels
My early MK2a was fitted with fibre glass, one scenario is that when the panel shape changed such as the MK1/2a rear depression for the dsuz fastener the press tool for the steel pressings would be on a long lead time for changes to the die. So they used fibre glass as an interim until the press dies caught up and then changed to steel. For 74 I haven't found anything definitive but I'm, thinking all steel.
The "A"s add a wrinkle. (I'm probably all wet). I think they had the bottom dzus since due to the different battery carrier/air box. My mid MK2A came with steel according to the 2nd owner, but the bottom bracket broke and the cover was lost. He switched to a non-A cover with a welded on lower bracket so he couldn't lose another. The oil tank covers is steel and supposedly original. My early MK2a was fitted with fibre glass, one scenario is that when the panel shape changed such as the MK1/2a rear depression for the dsuz fastener the press tool for the steel pressings would be on a long lead time for changes to the die.
