I have an Interstate tank that I have had for a long time that I have always used with the Roadster side covers I got with my ’74 bike, and I am thinking of getting some of those cheap and cheerful Interstate side covers Changaroo pointed out to match it so I can repaint the old side covers, which are well worn and get a new Roadster tank as well (maybe Fireflake Royal Blue - I just like it better than Pacific Blue).

Since I run the K&N filters, and don’t have a ham can (never did) the PO had used a hose clamp to attach the ignition to the frame tube. Originally, I took the old ignition mounting bracket and drilled it on the long arm so I attached it to the ham can mounting lugs on the front of the battery tray. You can see this in the grainy right photo (sorry, this was a snippet out of an old camera phone pic – only thing on my computer here). This has worked very well for 25 years, since I only have the ignition and disc locking keys on the ring.

Of course, my ignition was playing up and the cause was a seriously corroded set of terminals on the back of the ignition cluster and so the thing is apart at the moment and I would only like to do this once, since I will be rattle canning the bracket.

But, the new rubber boot “whale” has a key flap that would hang upwards in this position, so I am thinking of moving it to the other side, swapping with the Fiamm I have installed in the other mounting lug.

My question is, on the Interstate side covers for a 74, how far forward and inward do the side covers protrude ahead of the frame tube? I would like to know this relative to front right/left corners of the battery tray (green highlight), so I can get an idea if I can continue to use the current placement, which works pretty well, or if I need to make a new bracket?
