Well done Ash, I was bought up the same way , although later in life did have a healthy income (prior to retirement) and was able to buy and build a race bike which included some goodies including a FA head.
That came by way of JComstock , I sent him a set of billet cases made here in NZ when they were available and he sent me a FA head that he had fettled plus some other parts .
I still do all my own engine builds , although machining , porting, boring/honing is done by others.
I do feel for others who have to get specialists(?) to do all their work.
Be keen to see some flow/dyno results of a standard FA head to compare to the figures I have.
Well done John to get these heads going again
Regards Mike

Ask and ye shall receive.

That’s great flow info, and in the same thread there’s the before and after flow info of my modified RH10 along with Dyno results info (I dyno’d the bike before and after with no other changes and used the same Dyno), so it’s possible to estimate what increased flow and velocity might do to the rear wheel. Approximately.

But, AFAIK no one has actually done a back to back Dyno test of a FA, which wudda been great.

I love to buy all these goodies but being a low income earner all my life with family and now retired on a self funded pension, I have owned my Norton and done major improvements all the 46 years of ownership, scrump and saved as I went, lucky my Norton has always been reliable all its life, but I did most of the major hotting up back in the 80s as well the conversion to the Featherbed frame, still using the original valves in the ported and shaved head and spent money on upgrades when things were cheaper as I went along, I have built it my way but have upgraded the brakes, ignition, frontend and of course motor upgrades, everything else works great as it is, I got to use what I have these days, just living life is hard enough money wise, so to a lot of us poor buggers spending lots and lots of money on new heads, E starters, new barrels etc etc is just a pipe dream for me and a lot of others, as I say I got to use what I have and if anything breaks I have to fix it as cheap as I can and working at a TEC college for 31 years I had the machines and people to help with the work that was needed to do my Hotrod Norton, no labour cost to me, these days I just hope it keeps going as it has always, I have my 1200 Thruxton for every day use now and hopefully both bikes will see me out.

I must say, I admire your way of doing things, which on my PERSONAL bikes, was pretty much my way of doing things ever since the next bike I got after my early Kawasaki 90 which I replaced a half-dozen pistons on because i didn't know how to hand-mix 2-stroke fuel.

Your bike's history is a testament to "doing it the right way", which has rewarded the 'doer' with extended troublefree miles of extreme pleasure.

What a dull world this would be if we were all the same, and all rode the same bikes, and all did the same mods...

But what about collecting likes and having a high reaction score in a model specific forum? How do you get those if you have a mind of your own? ;)

My Norton is a keeper its been rewarded for good service since new and building it with my 2 hands you know every bit that is on it, if anything does let me down but lucky only minor things have its good to be able to work it out and fix so have no intensions of getting rid of it and I will ride it for as long as I can kick it, the only regret I have had was selling my 81 Triumph Thunderbird, it was a trouble free bike as well and made a big mistake selling that one, but we all make mistakes in our life time.
I think patting the bikes on the tank and thanking it for a great day out has helped, my mates think I am mad but it works for me and have always had reliable bikes in my collection, look after them maintenance wise and they well be good to you as they have for me, I never pussy them and I ride all my bikes hard, I think if you pussy them and that's when you will have troubles.
