I tested ATF in my gearbox; didn't like it

If you want to use a lighter vis gear oil, Torco makes MTF. It's the same vis as ATF, It flows about SUS 55 sec, right about in the middle of the 20wt range like ATF, but has a GL4 gear load package in it. Works great in the primary too.

In 43 years on my Norton I have stuck with the Hypoid gear oil that is reconmended in the manual, my gear box is so smooth with gear changes and has always been from day one it just clicks into gear and netrual is even a lighter click, so I have stuck with what works great for me, why change when its works so smoothly, in 43 years I have only replaced the lay shaft bearing (in 1979) and just the kick start gear from wear from the kick start pawl and 4 worn kick start pawls, rest of the gears are still like new.
But ATF F brand works well in the primary stops the clutch from slipping, I have never had gear oil come into my primary as I don't over fill my gear box, I use a messure cup to fill my gearbox to the recommended amount in the manual.

I also use ATF in the primary and have never seen any migration from the gearbox to the primary. I fill the gearbox to where it starts dripping out of the (open) level plug and when it quits dripping, put the level plug back in. As to why change anything when something works great? Darn good question! I don't know why we (I) occasionally do stuff like that! :)

I'm a fan of Silkoline light gear oil in my transmission and primary.

I started using it on the recommendation of a friend in the transmission of my Beta Trials bike. The clutch was often sticky and the bike didn't shift well until I went to the Silkoline. I then started using it in my Bultaco Sherpa T and it made the clutch much better.

I've been using it in my Norton for 5ish years, very happy with it in the primary and transmission.
