High fuel consumption solved!

" Usually, like a Ronson Lighter (or anecdotally, a Sherman tank) a matter of pride that it lights up first time, every time"

Unrelated and FWIW, the Ronson ad with that phrase came out in the 1950's so the anecdotes that it was applied to M4's in WWII are incorrect; it's (another example of) internet rewriting of history. ;)

Back in the day, when I owned my first Commando, a '71 750, it was my daily transport and I pretty much rode everywhere as fast as I could! Though I didn't care at all, I occasionally did an MPG check and mid 30's was always the result. I thought that was great!

Many people probably do not know when their motor is running too rich, because they never have it jetted lean enough for really good performance. When it is jetted lean enough, performance can become weather-dependent. A motor which is jetted slightly rich will usually perform better in cold weather or when the motorcycle is ridden through a forest.

ALL road going, carbureted, air cooled, motorcycles are set richer than what the optimal stoichiometric efficiency calls for.

If they weren’t then overheating, seizures and holed pistons would be commonplace.

And Al don't ride on the road so not much chance he ever road in a forest and of course he only uses methanol and in his own words ease for turning and most road bikes aren't ridden in the high rev zone.
