head gasket leak

Jim,
That's very interesting & one thing I hadn't considered. If my leak returns I will give that a try. I guess this is one of the reasons the Alfin process is superior to shrunk in liners. What is the number of the Loctite product? Also, do you know of any flame ring gaskets for the larger bore of a 920. One type of gasket I would like to try would be the modern multi layer steel type. P&M supplied one of these for my 930 Triumph triple & it seems to work well.

That would be Locktite 290

I do not know of a source for flame ring gaskets for a 920.

Cometic will make a multilayer gasket for anything -if you pay for the die....

Love those Cometic gaskets.
The Chicago Vincent group had Cometic make a complete set for the Vincent. I fitted them a couple of years ago, sure dried things up. Cometic has many types of gasket. The set for the Vincent is very thin aluminium coated with rubber on each side.
If the mating surfaces aren't perfect it doesn't seem to matter. And they are reuseable over and over. You can pull the timing cover off to play with the cams as many times as you like, with that Cometic gasket in there it always seals up perfectly.

The cost wasn't all that high. I think it was $80 for a complete set, no head gasket tho. I seem to recall that the club made up an order of 100 sets to get the finances to work out.
It should be easy to finance with the Commando, given the greater numbers of Commando vs Vincent.

I have talked to Cometic in the past about head gaskets. Since the 880/ 920 was about the only engine that could not use a flame ring and a copper gasket is readily available it didn't make much sense to pursue that.

As far as embossed rubber coated base gaskets -I keep them in stock. Jim

Maybe that purveyor of quality kit for Commandos, Matt at CNW might look into this type of gasket. I feel sure that they would sell.

Which gaskets would you like to see? Jim

Jim,

I would like to see a single or double layer head gasket of 0.010" or 0.020" coated as Worntorn mentioned, with a rubber type compound. I have used these on Rover V8 engines. You might know these as the Buick/ Pontiac/ Oldsmobile 215 C.I. They are used for head & gallery gaskets & work very well. What are your thoughts?

Timing cover, rocker boxes, Amal float bowl, manifold to head, AMC inner and outer cover, and clutch cable access window.

I will look at it again. I have certainly used the multilayer head gaskets on V-8's and a few bike engines.

I have been pretty happy with Andovers Flame ring gasket -or the common copper gaskets as well.

I think you would find that there would be no re-using an embossed multilayer head gasket as you can a copper gasket.

I would like to see a timing cover gasket, although, if it is like the base gasket you may not be able to re-use it either. I have found the rubber coating usually comes off if the gasket has been in place for a year or so.

For valve cover gaskets I think it would be hard to beat the silicone gaskets that are available. [well except maybe the orange color]

I don't think anything would help the amal float bowls- Maybe plastic gaskets with inset o-rings like some Japanese carbs.

I would like to see the trans gaskets. Jim

I have never tried to reuse a coated gasket. The likelihood of a leak & further strip down is just not worth it. Easily refitted areas such as timing covers /rocker covers being the exception. Please keep us informed Jim, & Consider my order for some head gaskets placed.

Martyn.
