I picked up two for myself , hopefully this investment will pay off someday.

Hey Tony,

Great news and good peace of mind for you - the bike’s a keeper after all!

Are you aware of any differences in specification between these engines and the Donnie engines? Do you have an exact weight of the lump? Looks like the slow boat to Aus isn’t that expensive.

Tony are they all untouched ex factory or have some of them been apart to look into performance upgrades etc? What I am trying to understand is what are the risks, "good news this was lighter and cheaper to ship 'cos it's not got a crank or gearbox in it".
Skiddy.

Yes there will be differences , some of the parts will be of old specs. Cast liners , old cam tensioner , reverse pattern shifting , center main bearing bolts issue , previous countershaft spline. Old style valve springs etc… All of these things can be dealt with. The engines will be gone through to find where they are out of date, all of the things I learned from David C.

(asap) I will open side covers and take pics and post them. As far as I can see these are the remaining Genuine MCT Norton 961 engines that were not purchased by Donington Norton.!

I will be emailing Stu too 🙂

Here are the photos I promised :

Notice the set screw in the head . I think they planned on EGR at some point . You can also see the passage in the exhaust port .
Looking at the timing chain tension just makes me wince!! I agree with the EGR, but it is nice to see that they really are full engines ready to install.

Wow Tony, thanks for sharing. I did message the seller last week, but no response so far. Interesting they have hand engraved part numbers, which is what my bike has, so it must be pretty early.
The upper timing chain tensioner can be improved a lot by grinding down the centre blade so it doesn’t touch the rollers (which aren’t actually rollers if you remember). In your picture you can see that the side plates are not touching the tensioner at all, so the centre blade wears the chain.

Do you intend to strip the engines completely Tony? If so I would really be interested to see if the bolts holding the centre crank bearing plate are too long.

At some point they will be disassembled. I would upgrade the chain tensioners to the new design . You can also text him on that phone number in facebook.

Notice that the older heads had the bosses between the fins to stop fins ringing .

The hole in the exhaust port on the cylinder head could also be for secondary air injection system. On cold start up air is forced into the exhaust port to help the rich fuel mixture to not destroy the catalyst converted and bring the temp of the cat conv up to operating temp faster.

I thought it was for something like that . It will stay plugged up !

Hi Cliffa , What the problem was not the bolts too long but rather the unthreaded part of the bolts were too long . This was solved with a slight counterbore at the entry to the threaded hole in my case.

Sorry Tony, yes that's what I meant to say. I wonder if this affected all the early engines? My bike has always sounded a bit "Endy" as if the mains or big ends are shot, so I wonder if that could be the reason.

This is one of this things that is hard to verify without disassembly . But if loctite was used at least the bolts won't end up in the crankcase bottom , like happened to David C .
