I'm rebuilding a 1972 750 Commando and planned to install the top end today. When I opened my new set of Hastings rings (Hastings number 7007), I was surprised to find 4 rings in the top slot of the envelope, none in the middle slot, and the oil rings in the third. All four compression rings have a bevel and they have no dot to show which way is up.

I've used Hastings rings many times on Triumphs and have never seen the top and middle rings to be the same, to have no dots, and to have the same bevel.

I've written Hastings about this, but no telling how long that will take. Has anyone worked through this before?

I just received Hastings rings with the set of JCC pistons I ordered. They came in different slots in the envelope, but I can't for the life of me find any dots on the rings showing which side is up. Also, it does feel like there is a bevel on one inside edge of all four rings. Is this bevel supposed to be at the top or bottom of the ring?

EDIT: Okay I just went back to look with better light and some magnification and I was able to find dots on the rings. The are very faint and almost the same color as the ring. They are located on the left hand side of the gap when holding the bevel side up and the gap at the top of the circle.

Also, see this: https://www.accessnorton.com/NortonCommando/hastings-rings-dots.16273/

I've looked very carefully through a 8" lighted magnifying glass - no dots. I'm very familiar with Hastings rings so I know they are hard to see. There are two types of beveled rings (tapered or not on the outer edge). The top ring could have the bevel up or down depending on the type and the top ring can be with or without dot, again depending on the type. The 2nd ring is absolutely supposed to have a dot - that's what the envelope and the web site says anyway. So, I'm still stuck - I think maybe they were packaged wrong.

Were yours two to an envelope slot as they are supposed to be?

Hi, with Hastings , no dots or signs , but inner bevel edge , the common practice is bevel up for the top ring and bevel down for the 2nd one ......

Yes, my rings were two per envelope slot. That said, it appears to me that the rings in both the "top groove" slot and the "2nd groove" slot are identical. In other words, all four of the rings have the very faint dot with an inside bevel on the same side as the dot.

My envelope instructions say to put the dot at the top which would position the bevel up for both my top and second ring. Now I'm officially confused.

Agreed! My envelope shows two possibilities for the Top Groove 1) Dot Up/Bevel Down; 2) No Dot/ Bevel up. For the 2nd Groove it shows only Dot Up/Bevel Down. So, according to my envelope - neither you or I have correct rings! For you, they show nothing with the Dot and Bevel on the same side and for me they show no option for no dot in the 2nd groove.

I hope the pictures show - If not, I'll edit and try again.

Ouch! See the Hastings catalog here: https://www.hastingsmfg.com/Master_Catalog_Pdfs/Master2012.pdf
On page 5 they show the type 102 ring with both the dot and the bevel up, and on page 6, section 10, they say" 4. Install directional rings with the dot up (otherwise oil pumping may occur)"
Quite the conundrum!
More info on the (P/N 7007) Norton 750 kit on pages 178, 317, and 340

I've spent a lot of today in the 2016 version of that catalog: https://www.hastingspistonrings.com/assets/files/9/hastings_catalog_master.pdf - it shows the same thing. What it doesn't show is the no-dot option rings I have and as shown on my envelope. And, my envelope doesn't even show the 102 type option.

Wow! If I had received your envelope, I would have just installed bevel up in both grooves since I have no dots. Yours are the same Hastings number but through EMGO and I bought my from The Bonneville Shop and mine only have Hastings markings on the box. I'm quite annoyed now that I study the box and see the date 8/18/2010! Our bar codes are identical. I would be interested to know what Hastings date is under the EMGO sticker under the bar code on yours.

From Hastings. Which ways up? https://www.hastingspistonrings.com/tech-tips-faqs/which-ways-up

Based on what I've seen I'm planning to install them both with the bevels up. That is also the side where I see the faint dots.

Mine came from The Bonneville Shop as well! The Emgo product code on my box is for Hastings rings. I'm also able to see through the Emgo label and my manufacture date is 12-Nov-2015.

Pretty clear the top ring has bevel up. For second ring, however, I found this:

And this: http://www.grumpysperformance.com/sept2017/ringcom3.gif
And this: http://www.grumpysperformance.com/ringtech1.jpg

So now I think marinatlas is correct in post #4.

I more or less agree. However, I've found where Hastings says that and where they say otherwise. Also wrecks and I have exactly the same part number and bar code, but very different contents. At this point, I must understand why before assembling the engine. For all I know, I was sold some returned junk!

I talked to tech support at Hastings. They say that the top and 2nd are the same for the Norton and that they both go bevel up.

They are aware that the web site has it two different ways and are happy that I didn't follow the top-up/2nd-down instruction.

They also said that they weren't always dotting them in 2010 and now they are and the dot always rules.

They also said that they put 4 rings in my envelope's top slot since they were the same and agreed with the picture/instructions.

Part of my problem was being sold a seven year old set!
