Moved post from Walking dogs to new thread here.
Goodbye Nugget.
I had to put my buddy down yesterday. Very sad but it was time -
severe arthritis, loosing control of bowels and confusion.
15 1/2 years so I can’t ask for more than that . What’s more he was very healthy for nearly 14 of those years . 13 good seasons of bird hunting. Always said there are only two things wrong with
dogs - 1. You get too attached to them.
2. They don’t live long enough.
Regarding number two I have to be grateful-15+ years is above average.

So sorry for the loss of Nugget, Richard. Putting your dog down is one of the hardest yet kindest thing to do. Your dog gave you his love and loyalty to you for his entire life. A man could ask for nothing more. Cry for your loss and never forget your life together. Again, I’m so sorry Richard.

@Richard Tool - get another one (or two). They are so good for your soul.
A great truism/goal is "I wish to be the person my dogs think I am"

I have two more now - absolutely the best companions!

Nice pair Rob - enjoy them and I wish them long and happy lives .
Never say never so I don’t know if I’ll get another. Need some time right now . Thanks for the kind words .

One of the hardest decisions to make. But necessary to do. Your memories of all the good things will stay. Better than remember seeing a dog suffering.
The best dog I ever had was my last one. Could not have a new one, too unfair to be compared with her.

I have a wonderful vet. When my last dog, Milly, was obviously in final discomfort I called him.
We brought Milly up into the shade of her favourite tree, he came to our house and, after a bit of a pat, gave her a "calming shot", she rested her head in my daughter's hands while he administered the "green dream".
I wish I could go that way.

Could not have said it better Larry.

Thanks everyone for the sympathy , kind words and encouragement. Many dog lovers among us here .
As I said , I am grateful for the long healthy life Nugg led.
His arthritis started to make him stumble in the woods two years ago forcing retirement from hunting but other than that he was good until 15. Went downhill very fast in the last month. I had hoped he would pass in his sleep and to not have to make the decision on euthanasia, but that was not to be.
I don’t know if there will be another dog in our household.
Certainly not for a while anyway - another dog would have mighty big paw prints to fill.
Again , thanks to all of you who took the time to post - big bandages for my broken heart. Very much appreciated.
Richard

I lost my ever faithful black Lab Boswell almost two years ago. He was the fourth one going back almost 35 years. I would love to have another but not sure if I can go through it again. Its easier now to get my dog fix from strangers I see walking happy dogs. A minute or two petting and admiring their dog, we go our ways, and every ones happy.
