good alternative to Lucas headlight...

both filaments burnt out on my OEM headlight and could not find a new bulb locally so decided to go with something different
candlepower has Bosch lens/reflector units on closeout really cheap at $21 http://store.candlepower.com/fco7h4mohebd.html
and 45/45w H4 bulbs too, put both on my bike and they have worked well so far...the stock alternator can deal w/ the load and the light combo
is better than OEM and lights the road up as well as can be expected for 45 blazing watts...and FWIW have no connection to candlepower, etc., just
a satisfied customer

Might experiment with these HIR bulbs now you done crossed the line outside Norton parts book. May take some mounting base modes.

I read somewhere that HIR bulbs only work and are made for single filament applications but don't know if that is true....FWIW am hoping a good, affordable LED headlight is produced soon, there is a 7" unit on the market but it is $300, gets mixed reviews , and is negative ground only ....will keep looking for a better one from what I've read they only pull about 30W

Hm. Yeah single head light needs hi and low beam elements. Never mind.
$21 for Bosch sounds like good deal to light your way. I bought a seal beam from J-P Harley catalog ~$70. Claims best bike light there is. My off bike test shows its plenty good enough for me, so I didn't waste too much money.

was looking at this, should fit, my headlight is still the original bulb from when the bike was parked in 1979.

Just be aware that car-truck light have different lens pattern light pattern than cycles. They are often made for right or left side install too.

I never knew that car or truck lights for USA use were handed? I have heard that lens used on the other side of the pond were though or in places where they drive on the opposite of the correct :wink: side. There are vertical lines in the lens to direct the light in the correct direction for those that are handed.

Just as long as you know it can be an issue to check into.
Most electrical items are un-returnable once installed.
I found my best light in J&P Harley catalog, advertised as worlds best-brightest cycle headlight. Maybe not but Its how I'd describe its coverage, beam shape and distance. Love the expectations of the constant hunt for satisfying Commando offerings.

yep probably would look weird, and that is the same one I posted on further up (but didn't name) that is negative ground only...

After reading about the CandlePower lens for $21 I bought one. They shipped it out real fast and had it in my hand in two days priority mail. Nice looking unit. No bulb included though. Now once I replace my light socket to a three prong I'll be in business.

good deal, hope it works out...BTW when you buy an H4 socket get one marked high heat, high performance, etc...the cheap ones sometimes melt even powering standard 6024 sealed beams, 55W H4's etc....and from what I've read a stock Commando may or may not have enough power for a 55/60W if you do much low RPM riding, that is why I ordered a 45/45W bulb with mine since I ride in town a fair bit
