A puzzling problem - when I stripped my gearbox, I noticed that the mainsheet bearing in the inner cover felt rough. Thinking that it was damaged, I bought a new one, heated up the case and changed it.
After cooling down, I found the new bearing to have exactly the same notchey feeling as before, and the old bearing, now lying on the bench, felt perfectly smooth.
Thinking that perhaps there was a bit of dirt or something that I had overlooked I removed it and did a very through cleaning job. checked the new bearing for roughness, checked the outer race for any off signs, etc. Found nothing at all, so put it back in. When the case is hot, the bearing seems to rotate ok (hard to really feel through thick gloves though!), but on cooling, feels notchey again.
With the old bearing (no idea if this was the original or not) there were no unusual noises or anything from the box, it just seemed to work, even though the bearing feels so wrong.
I do not have the bearing numbers in front of me as I write, but they were supplied by a very trustworthy source as genuine Andover Norton stock, and I'm inclined to believe this. This leads me to thing that the fit is wrong, and the outer race is being compressed too much. Before I try to relieve the housing, has anyone seen this before?
