I think I am in the April 1st camp. I hope so for his sake. Otherwise, timing cover and/or top end removal just to diagnose.

If it's an April Fool's prank then I would have posted today and not a couple days ago.

I have not put a magnet to it. It wouldn't stick to the bronze anyways.

No special chain tensioner.

Bike fired up on second kick after sitting all winter. Sat there and idled at 800rpm like a champ. Took a spin down the street. Still runs like a raped ape.

I won't put more than 1000 miles on it this year. I am tempted to pull the timing cover and see if anything is askew.

Well, at the risk of 'swimming against the tied' of the consensus here, I'm gonna agree with my own earlier statement (!)

... if you are only going to do 1000 miles this year... and there are no untoward noises or other symptoms... and you are missing the time and / or enthusiasm to strip your motor now... I would say leave it be and strip it next winter. I would gamble that you are highly unlikely to damage anything inside that's not already outside service limits.

Start making your plans for a good and full overhaul and thinking of what upgrades to include next winter and enjoy the 1000 summer miles!

I stuck my finger in the cam chain hole and it felt like the cam chain was tight. I took the cover off but everything looks normal. I slipped the cover back on and the chain felt fine. I'll put it back together and if all goes right the timing will be good. Worse case... I'm riding the push button Triumph tomorrow.

Looking at the picture, one would think you could get a pinch of granules with your fingers. That not being the case, it could be some of that fine pacific northwest moisture your engine ingests on rides not long enough to get everything warmed up properly thereby leaving a load of moisture in the oil and the oil tank.

I buttoned everything up. Since I remembered where the ignition was set I didn't need to retime. Started second kick. I'll check in the morning if I have any leaks.

It's oil foam from the combination of oil and air the spits out your oil return into the tank. Why do I know this? Because I had my own freak out session when I saw it in mine. It looks just like brass dust in the oil. Put some on a paper towel, there will be no metal particles.
Now get on it and have some fun!

Rigmarole?

Perhaps, but I am the local entertainment.

I just put new oil in a rode that damn thing. Going to ride it again tomorrow.

I think I just ignored the old oil. I'll check it again on the next change. And maybe panic post again.

Ordinarily if you drain your oil & leave the pan on an angle , leave the dregs when you pour it off ,
then angle the dregs container for a while & drain off , you can see wots been where, as its there .
