If a so so drum brake you can't hardly get tire to squeal then can suddenly lock up and loose brake and stay upright grip. Good disc brake can squeal tire to best slowing effect but our 100-110 front just ain't got mush grip power to pull down much better either - so good brakes may not be enough in the time/space. Brakes and braking are motorcycles weakest ability and changing aim is what saves me way more than brakes in nick of time. Only real safety is going slow enough can dodge or take impacts w/o much issue or better yet quite the dangerous riding addiction.

My front disc has no issues locking up the wheel.

For racing purposes or repeated hard braking I'm sure a more modern setup would be great, but I don't push this bike that hard...

Cheers,

FWIW
Front brake add-ons are good and they are a definite improvement. The issue is, it is hard to get stuff for the rear brake to have a better braking balanced machine, at least pre MKIII. I got the RGM HIGH FRICTION REAR BRAKE SHOES and they go far in this regard.

Over the winter or during extended storage the rear brake hub will sure develop some corrosion, rust. The RGM shoes, and other shoes I am sure, collect this on the first run and although it is not a glaze per say, it is a contamination of sorts. Every spring I simply pull the hub, wire wheel the inside, clean the shoes and hit everything with brake cleaner. This annual activity will help anybody's rear braking.

pv, I take it the commandospecialties rear shoes are not the high friction? They do carry the RGM front shoes. Did you get them right from RGM? My front ones made a big difference but I'd like to work on the rear. Seems it used to be you had to send them your old parts and they installed the friction brakes. Still like that?

Dave, I do not know about the CS shoes, I got my rear shoes right from Roger at RGM. I do not know about the fronts but check these out on the RGM web site.
The rears are ready to ship. The front may be a different story. Just because the say they are lined in the UK doesn't mean you have to send yours in, but I do not know.

Hungry Joe,
Sorry for your loss. Sometime sh*t happens, although the Safety Officer and the accident investigation board will point out all the events leading up to the impact that you could have avoided the accident. Type A personalities will always fly aircraft and ride bikes. The best we can do is maintain our rides well and Never loose situational awareness, everything out there is trying to kill use.

Hi level panic skill to control brake is hardest most valuable skill to learn, second only to the reflex to steer sharply out the way if possible or to crash with least injury - though nothing but nothing always beats Fate THE Hunter. I'm rational enough know I'm going to go down again - even in last few feet before shut off, so when I don't I'm pleasantly surprised, how about you?

I'll be tracking down a place to recover front pad in some new age friction material comparable with wave rotor alloy.

Hungry JOe ,did time slow down during the slowdown-swerve period ? Just curious as others said this happens along with heightened clarity.

Hilarious comment... what do you fly? I'm an NFO flying in P-8As for the US Navy...

Will.
Retired, flew UH-1(all series), AH-1(all), OH-6, OH-58, and finally the AH-64 Apache. and it was fun. Did a lot of flying in Cal in a AH-1 and a 74 Commando. Four of us got stopped by CHP at 0200 in the morning on our bikes, lights out, NVGs enjoying the ride through Jolon Pass
