Didn't see anything in the book about removing this 4-dimpled retainer. Does it knock out with the bearing?

Front wheel bearing retainer

I'd like to repack the bearing. Rotor side was easy.

In earlier models that 4 dimpled retainer screwed in, and was removed using a 4 pronged removal tool.
Not sure I recall what happens in a Commando, but don't try pushing it out just yet !

You often see them munged up on earlier models, where previous owners used a punch or cold chisel to bash them in or out ! They are surprisingly expensive to buy or find in good condition for earlier models too.
I'd guess that Commando ones have different threads...

Thanks for the replies. I may have to make a ring spanner or a castellated socket for the purpose.

And it worked like a charm. I'm continually amazed by how easy the fasteners come off. Hope it's the same when I get to the brake caliper.

Sometimes the felt seal can be swelled and not pass over the bearing retaining special nut that drives the speedo gearbox. This can be made worse if the nut has been damaged by not using the proper tool to remove or refit it much the same as damage to the front wheel bearing retainer (you were having problems with).

Mine like many had been fitted and removed with a hammer and punch but some filing sorted it and once speedo gearbox is refitted it cannot be seen.
