I've been searching all afternoon but can't find a post that gives the dimensions (mm x mm x mm) for the single row front wheel bearing that is in a '72 front disk wheel hub. I believe it is Norton p/n 040100. Found lots of info on the 17x40x16 double row one, but need help on the other one.
Thanks, Bill

Bill, the factory parts books show the same part number for the single row bearing used in both disk and drum front hubs: 040100

This site gives you sizes and an industry standard part number:
"The single row ball bearing, 17x40x12, can be obtained in a sealed version, lubricated for life. One such bearing is SKF 6203-2RSH"

This post just reminds me, in 95 I found the double race had failed and as it was a bank holiday I couldn't get hold of a spare. Luckily I had two new sealed single races, I machined up a couple of spacers and fitted a single race in each side and they are still in there.

Now I've told you it'll probably fail.

Wonder why Norton fitted a higher load capacity twin row ball race in the first place? Methinks the higher load capacity provides a clue......

True and I'm not advocating anyone to change the single race bearings, but I've noticed a number of Japanese bikes use the same sealed single race bearing in the front hub. I think the pair I used were intended for a Honda. Perhaps the double race was to help with sidecar loading on early Nortons.

Norton may have used the double row bearing in the front hub to keep the machining operations the same as the rear hub, which requires the double row on the chain pull side. In short, the same machine set up could do both hubs.

Just my thoughts .... don't take it as gospel.
