Picked up this project bike to tear down came across some electrical tape wrapped aroubd the main Tube frame proximal to the rear.

Some people should not work on these bikes. Any suggestions to why someone would do this? can I washer weld to patch it or run a bolt through it. Any ideas? I was planning on repainting the frame.

I saw one engineering site that said if you divide that section inter 1/3 the middle 3rd is the worst spot and where this hole is should be OK? the hole is about 3/8 diameter tight through the top and bottom.

Even the wiring on this bike is butchered with poorly made connectors and cheap wires. arrgh.

I have pics just trying to figure out how to post here.

Likely to mount a different fuel tank during the chopper craze.

No problem at all for a qualified weldor to close it up for you. Quick & easy.

Been in the metal trade my entire life & never heard of "washer weld", so, no.

Have a practice on something the same thickness, ⅜ hole will be easy get your amps right and start on one side it can be easier to keep pulsing onto just the weld you deposit, obviously you'll have to work around with the mig hand piece , I light clean up with a flap wheel .

Cut a piece of 3/8" bar the diameter of the frame
Take to a welder
He will prep the bar and weld it in and grind / linish off
If he's any good you will never know there was ever a hole there

To be clear, have an accomplished weldor do it. (30 minute job)

Not for structural reasons, but for cosmetic reasons. Structurally, it can stay, no problems.
But now is the time, everything is accessible.

can't believe thus previous owner used kids pipe cleaner to wrap wires and oil hose uggh.

Seems to have been keen on drills . LOOK AT THE MUFFLERS .
is it a hole right through again ? .
If theyre the good solid steel ones , ring when tapped with a spanner , DONT LOOSE THEM .

Could chop it into a 72 J P N Frame ! .

A welder would weld those holes as quick as you can type about them
I've not seen a steel rocker feed pipe like your one before?
Please don't tell me that exhaust system has exhaust hangers hanging from the frame?
Cheers

Two bolts through the seat tube.
The seat tube also looks as if it has been cut off and re-welded.

Maybe the frame hole was to pass wiring to the rear lights or even for an oil in frame setup?

Fyi: if you want images to actually display in your posts, don't just paste the link to the page holding the images, but right click on the image and select "copy image URL/address" and just paste that here.

I was gonna replace then, they are dented, didn't see any holes , will have to look again. So much electrical tap wrapped around wires and the frame itself. It'll feel goo to bring this back to life though. I'll paint the frame once fixed including centre stand and hopefully do something with that flimsy side stand. usinf a swingarm stand to hold it up for now.

OK Ill try that , thanks.

From the picture - Top View - it looks like theres a boody great bolt right through the side to mount them .

" Maybe the frame hole was to pass wiring to the rear lights or even for an oil in frame setup? "

If its just ONE HOLE , youll be fine . If its right thru BOTH ( top & bottom ) Id be worried .
The Tought ( from quoted ) a steel ' hollow bar ' ( tube ) threaded for a stopper - would be
enginneeringly sound . You could actuall use it for additional oil , as they need it .Plumb In .

WASSEL ' silencers ' ( ahem ) have marvelous acoustics , and add output . THEY have three rivits in the back
-to a flange inside , letting the baffles fall out when the aluminium rivets chatter . Three CAREFULLY set
P.K. screws can work . Mike Grunt . hit the ' X ' .

All the swine hear wear them .https://www.accessnorton.com/NortonCommando/any-pictures-of-the-jim-lee-mick-grant-commando-based-race-bike.34288/

They have a folded ' U ' on the rear , say 4 / inches long . To drop a mounting bolt OR TWO in . So a U with the roof milled out along the center . more or less .

a good swing with a 9/16 spanner and youll get a ' C ' perhaps . The Afts ronded in , say 1/2 . Came in 1 1/2 , 1 5/8 7 1 3/4 pipe fit .
