I've seen this type of reassembly and worse before...it was preformed by a drug sucking hippy (motorcycle mechanic)
Lost in space...
Glad you have it sorted
Should this have been a Blue Loctite moment? I wonder because as I assemble my '74 I keep coming back to putting a light thread locker on even the most innocent bolts.
I can only remember using loctite in a couple of places
The clutch center nut
And the chaincase to crankcase bolts
There maybe some more but I can't think of them?

I did not apply any on reassembly this last time. If I ever hear that clunk sound again when going over harsh bumps, I'll know where to check first and if same culprit, will go locktite route. Ha ve never had a negative issue from using it on anything, so it can oly help or make no difference.
Wheel to go back on today after spending some hours fitting new tail light/license plate bracket last night. The previous one (from another member here) lasted three years but when the little machine screw at forward end of cowling went AWHOL while out on long ride, the extra vibration must have fatigued the bracket. It had sheared in half and was not worth trying to get a weld up done. New one was poorly made, lic plate area badly warped, the mudguard fixture arms poorly angled and indicator lamp mounting bracket not square. So lots of fighting to get installed.
Ok bike feels like it should. Forks bounce up once and stop versus deep dive and oscillating. No clunking.
At a fuel up I came across my motorcycle training class instructor. Haven't seen him for 5+ yrs so was good catching up. He was impressed with the Commando.
