A guy once told me, you have to ride those old bikes to understand how bad they are. They might look quaint, but that is as far as it goes - reality bites. If you lived in the middle ages knowing what you know now, would you be a genius ? I watched Geoff Duke racing the Gileras at Fisherman's Bend when I was 14 - it cursed me with the bug. I am now probably faster than he ever was. Speed is relative to the circumstances.

Makes me wonder what you think you're up to with this thread;)

Classic racing can be dangerous. Many of the old pre-WW2 cars can just fall over. And a lot of guys died in speed events in the old days. We are now more risk conscious. Some old bikes, you would not even ride to the pub.

Life is indeed safer today. It is also a lot less fun. But then fun isn't what the modern world is about.
It is about "but something might happen".
The pendulum swings both ways. We may, or may not, live to see it swing back.

I couldn't put it better!

I wonder how much safer when I commonly see "young" people proceed down the street (and across it) without ever looking up from their mobile.

A few months ago two kids pulled out of a side road in front of me on bicycles
Both looking down at their mobiles
I only just avoided them

If Darwin's right, future generations will be born with a USB port built in....
No… if Darwin’s right, most of them will die before procreating…

Evolution is best on survival of the fittest… or in other words; the eradication of the rest !

Brain Dead! I live in the country and am surprised by the children that never go outside to play!

Noticed that last time we had a heavy snow fall too...........
Last time we had decent snowfall in the U.K. playing in the snow was illegal due to covid !

F*cking mass hysteria driven power crazed ridiculous overreaction.

IMHO at least.

But seriously, if you think the young have had a tendency to be indoors too much, that has certainly been made much worse having had two years of brainwashing that meeting people and going outside will kill you ! Two years of behaviours and habits, that for many young people, may never be properly undone.

Career advice for the young: become a therapist…

TBH the time I was thinking of was a good few years before Covid....
Walked to the supermarket (half hour) and you'd think the bomb had been dropped, no signs of civilisation to be seen...
Same these days by the river and canals, used to be nets, jam jars or swimming :)

I agree 100%.

My point about covid is just that it’s has made it much worse… perhaps for ever.

Suspect a lot of what we see today isn't the result of the hysteria and lock down but rather those things just
accelerated what was happening and made it more visible.
When I was young the absolute worst part of having to go to work was being INSIDE all day. Now it is the opposite.
What of the pendulum swinging the other way? I would offer journeys into space. People like Musk with his
drive to leave earth are those who are not risk adverse.
