I've had a Trispark which ran great for a few years then gave up the ghost, put the old Boyer in and started up. Replaced the Boyer with a Pazon Altair and CNW coil and the same thing happened after two years or so. Put the old Boyer back in and started right up again. My question to you experts is why is this happening, and the Boyer continues to work ? Also should I try the Trispark or Pazon again ? 1973 850
Thanks,Larry

Once I sorted out the broken wires on the pick up plate the Boyer on my bike has worked fine for 25+ years.

Check your peak voltage, maybe its too high and the Trispark and Pazon were sensitive.

I don't know why people hate Boyers so much as I got over 30 Years with mine and as far as I know its still working on my mate's Norton he sold with it on, I had it without any problems not even any broken wires on the pick up, now I am running a JH maggie without a battery, but you hear a lot of problems with the other EIs, I would just keep the Boyer in it, who knows it might go forever.

If the Boyer was working fine , what were your reasons for the change ?

Why not contact Trispark or Pazon. At least I think Pazon guarantees their products for more than 2 years.
Has an Auto electrician tested your wiring?

Lucas Rita is pretty reliable, maybe not the best and they do like a good battery but they just seem to keep going

The reason for the change was a better idle and no kick back (bad knees). I'm sending the unit back to pazon under warranty to see what they find out. Also I checked the volts at the Boyer and found 13.5 around 3000rpm, does that sound like to much ? Thanks again

14 years on old Boyer here. Starts and idles great.
The previous owner installed it 12 years before
I bought the bike so it's been firing the bike for 26 years to date.
The same type ignition is on the 650 ss and it also runs great.

I've wondered the same thing on peoples opinion of Boyer. I have probably over 120,000 miles with Boyer ignitions. One broken pickup wire in all those miles and years. Seems to work fine for me. It might not be the latest and greatest, but it gets me where I want to go. It's kinda the Chevy 350 of ignitions.
A friend has had the same experience with his Tri-spark. Quits working, slaps the old trouble free Boyer back on until the new Tri-spark arrives. The replacement fails and off it goes to the manufacturer and on goes the Boyer. The folks at Tri-spark have been awesome as far as customer service goes. They are very responsive with a quick turn around on replacements. They really do seem to care about their product. Good luck

For me the reason to change from the early Boyer was the low voltage, fully advanced spark. Not really a problem except on a MKIII when the E-start pulls the voltage down.

If I had gone to a 3 phase alternator first I probably would still have the Boyer but after it left me on a cold, dark night with the sprag locked up, I needed a change.

The Altair does seem to be a better unit, never any stumble off idle.

Thanks to Dyno Dave for discovering the low voltage kick back on the analogue Boyer.

The old Boyer is indeed reliable and I've used Boyer for years, but in my opinion it has two major faults, a straight line advance profile and keeps advancing, it is an ignition compromise. Modern e ignitions like the Trispark have an advance curve to suit a particular motor ie mimic the AAU curve.

I reckon for ignition reliability and performance a well set up points system is still hard to beat.

I believe the Tri Spark was revamped a couple of years ago to make it more resilient. Not heard of one of these failing, no kickback and the idle stabilisation is fun to watch when setting up the carbs. Like others 21 years out of Boyer, they can't be that bad, just that some owners expect them to live for ever.
