Dyno Run

In my Peel case I put the 34 single on as simplest to get to break in evenly fueled while awaiting the real Combat head to put on w claimed more powerful flowing dual Amals instead of the spare stock standard head, then got bored and began lightening process with a 2>1 megaphone which disappointed even more with all the Supertrap plates as open and loud as could be, so finally in frustration took out the plates and blew big hole in the end cap. Next ride out almost crashed 3x leaving my drive way as each time I gave her gas I ended up on tail light then really hung on and still ended up on seat back, so last time just got all the way back with locked arms for big shit eating involuntary grin and squealing. Point being everything affects everything so maybe duals are potentially the most potent = ain't necessarily so in all cases. The quickest thing I owned was the P!! with dual Amals and two open headers. When I did try dual 32 Amals on Peel she got a bit more responsive per throttle twist down low but didn't pull past 90 like the single, which may just be the way the Amals were jetted but didn't like em as much after the single for wipeing sneers off the sport bikers faces.

On New Zealand roads 50 HP is plenty as we can only do 100kph, as for the one carb, are not the pistons taking turns sucking?
Hey NTST8, those leather throw over bags with Norton embossed on them...you want them as I'll never use them.Rather then go to a good home that stored under the house.
I agree on the HP, the 39hp bike still gets to the rally sites at the same time as the rest. On my bike the relative hole in the mid range is the target, the top end will be whatever it ends up being.
Great offer on the bags thanks, very keen. Happy to trade for beer tokens :D

. Essentially, check that vibration is not shaking an electrical connection loose.
Will do. Ignition wiring done by yours truly so of course it will be perfect - ha ha.

There are a few ways to fatten up the midrange, however once the motor has been overported there is probably no easy way back. The two into one pipe will work as long as the tail pipe has larger cross sectional area than the two header pipes, however you still have to tune to it. If you need to advance the cam to compensate for the pipe, beyond a certain point the noise gets louder and the bike goes slower.

Hi Iain, did you get to Te Puna for the Dyno Run?
Did you see my posting on how much my mid range was effected by the basic change of mufflers?
I ran 2 x sets when on the dyno, now running the noisy ones from my road bike on the race bike to get the best advantage.
Successful weekend at Hampton Downs, managed to get in 6 races with no major issues or DNF's
Regards Mike

Hi Mike
yes we took our precious Waikato dollars and boosted the BOP economy :D Great guys to deal with.
Have been following your post with interest.
I didnt get to Hampton sadly but glad to hear you went well. Caught up with Plazz yesterday and he was pretty happy with how his bike ran as well.
He also suggested a good 2 into 1 could be good for mid range on a road bike. I prefer the stock look though so will soldier on.
cheers iain

Good to catch up today, thanks again for the bags.
Have given them a good first dose of beeswax dressing, at least my hands are nice and soft now. :D

Where do you get throw over leather bags with Norton inscribed on them?

Dave

From 72Combat
These ones were, i'm told, made by someones sister a number of years ago - don't know whether that was her day job but they look to a professional standard.
I can't post a pic as i dropped them in to a shoe repair shop this morning - to have a broken strap replaced.

I think it is interesting that the Dyno results show that the single carb is ahead of the dual carbs pretty significantly up to about 3500 RPMs and keeps up till about 4000 RPMs. This is why many owners are so satisified with them. These rev ranges are the normal ones you use. I have on my bike a single 38 mm Amal 1000 series carburetor. I had a single 34 Mikuni before and it was OK but it did seem to stifle the engine a bit higher up in the rev range. The 38 is an improvement at the higher speeds although it must not be as good as twin carbs. It was good enough that my pretty stock 850 was passing huge line ups of Harleys going up the Bear Tooth pass this summer. It was enough power always even two up with luggage.

One of the more attractive aspects of the Norton is how well it handle a load. I have never ridden a bike that made so little difference on if it was one up or two up and the feeling of effective torque.

I know I could loose 30 pounds but the Red Hot Norton don't care.

Cargo hauling was main job of Peel and didn't bother her even if all the mass was carried on one side like oil or beer in one hard bag or a big chain saw and feed bags on rear loop, to break off before re-enforced by struts. Its possible to bottom tire on fender rubbing I found and have seen on two heavy people riding parade with HD's in citys. Main upset with cargo is in gusty conditions ifits so big loopsided or has something flapping in wind the aerodynamics gets distrubed. Oh yeah one thing to watch out for with heavy cargo is its rather easy to do unintended wheelie across wide intersections if leaving light with some gusto then grinning in delight to keep it up a while on purpose. Rear brake becomes more useful too. Other things if power response was like Peel Combat, ya don't pass cars by waiting close behind and give gas to swing out or may become a flat tracker into oncoming or off far edge, ya hand back and zoom up before swinging out nor enter turns under hi throttle w/o first tasting the rear break free ease on that particular time temp, speed and road texture.
