Hi All.
I have fitted in place the distributor points chain.
It is new from Andover.
It is not very tight, it moves up and down about 3/4 mm.
Is it normal?
Thank you.
Piero

I would think the distributor points chain would have the same specification as the magneto chain. Normal up - down movement for a magneto chain mid-run should be 4 to 5 mm.

Check the side plates if there is an E in a circle !!!!!!!!
Hi Andy,
please, what means "side plates".
Sorry but i ont understand.
Thank you.
Piero

The plates are the outer pieces of steel that go over the ends of the pins. They are the ones you remove when breaking a chain to shorten it.

What he said.

Basically any reputable manufacturer puts a mark on the chain.

iwis, Regina, Renold etc. It doesnt mean its good but no mark at all !!!!!!!

Andy

Just had a look at the Andover site and they sell mainly Renold but for the mag drive they also
sell iwis, logo is Jwis. Good chain.

Hi.
the chain has too much play, more than 5 mm.
It is a Reynold and comes new from AN n. 06.7705 42L (NM18257).
You know that it is impossible to tight.
The cam sprocket, intermediate gear and and cam chain, are well in place.
I can think that the priblem is the new chain that is not good, what else?
Better to change with a new other one like Jwis?.
Thanks
Piero

Hi.
I have find the problem.
The two fixing studs in the case for fix the body was not wasted so there was not clearance.
I have fitted the two wasted studs and now the body mooves a little bit.
Now the chain is well tight.
Sorry but there is not interference with the cam chain system.

Yes.
The points/magneto chain is tightened by the two upper studs on the points housing. These are undercut after the thread that the fixing nut screws onto, to allow for adjustment of tension of the chain. Make sure you have the spacer washer behind the intermediate gear.

Ciao Thomas,
I have the plain washer in place.
Why you need on Atlas/P11/N15 and not on Commando?.

Piero,
It has to do with the twin chain design of the intermediate gear. If you look at a Commando where the points are driven off of the cam, the boss that the bearing rides in is protruded about the width of the washer. The twin chain gear is flush. If you forget the washer, your gear has the possibility of contacting the engine crankcase. If you have both to compare you will see what I mean.
Cheers,
Thomas

Anybody with a chain , puts a straight edge / steel ruler , along the sprockets - to check alignment .

You could always fit a Magneto , then you can throw ALL the rest of the electrics in the trash , bar the Kill switch . :p
