You don't need to ride it around the block to empty the sump. Just start the darn thing and run it for a while. Put a pan under it if you are worried about a mess.

3 quarts with an empty sump according to the manual I have.

A turkey baster is messy. Good old Harbor Freight sells a brake bleeder kit that will suck fluids up into a small tank. It requires an air compressor. I've used it for all kinds of automotive and motorcycle fluids. Not as quick as grabbing a turkey baster to setup, but better control.

Real Nortons - at least through early slimline featherbeds - didn't have dipsticks. To own one you had to have enough skill to guesstimate if the oil inside the tank was below the maximum level decal on the outside of the tank and to remember to run the bike before checking the level. I guess guesstimating is a lost art in today's computerized world. Ok I'll run for cover now.

I don't own a Commando. I did, but not anymore. It was so long ago I can't remember if the Commando I had even had a dip stick.

I have a P11 that is dip stickless. Putting oil in anything is not much cause for concern for me. I've got important stuff to worry about like raking up leaves, or getting another cup of coffee at the moment.

You still rake up leaves (leafs?) ??? Wake up and join the 21st century, man.......

leaves, damn I knew that looked wrong. leafs looks much better. Yeah I rake the back yard and use a blower behind the garage. Almost enough of a PITA to want to get away from the big trees.

I'm probably not capable of waking up. This dream is working well enough so far. ;)

Oil volume expands with heat. Hot oil will encourage any condensed water to go back to whence it came from.

Best

I measured 1/2 US quart between the marks on my MKIII several years ago, and stamped it on the dipstick. Keep in mind that the tank is not cylindrical, but as you approach the full mark it takes more oil to raise the level.

Yeah, get yourself a leaf blower! That way you can make lots of noise while blowing your leaves into someone else's yard!

I really like that line! I can think of sooo many applications - can I steal it?
I mean, to be a dipstick is something - but to be dip stickless is really special!
I’ve often wondered why being a ‘dipstick’ became a derogatory term? I mean, what’s wrong with dipsticks ?!

"Turns out, “dipstick” comes from “dip”, which was 1920s slang for a stupid person. Next came “dipshit”, which is obviously a lot stronger, so those less daring aggressors lightened it to “dipstick”."
