When installing a new data frame plate , what is the correct way ?
i assume drill out the old rivets , what size drill ?
then when attaching with the rivets , just use a rivet set punch and hammer on ?
or
wrap the new plate on the frame head , mark the first two rivets , drill a certain depth , install two rivets and the wrap plate , drill last two holes and install rivets ?
looking for advise

They are hammer drive screws - not rivets. If you're careful you can grab them with pliers and unscrew them.

Using a screwdriver or similar with a hammer to tap a couple of flats either side of the domed head can give the pliers (or pincers) something to grip on to.

What is the correct orientation for the frame plate. I have seen them both ways round. Did Norton fit them either way or have people put them on the wrong way round during a rebuild.

nip-pull-twist
drive screw removal done
plates definitely both directions during the commando era.
Knowing which direction during what time frame and series of commando is the difficult part.
With a new plate I always suspect fraud. Original faded is my preference.

The original was read from the drive side. 20 years after putting a new one on my ‘72 combat I noticed I put it on facing the timing side. Oh well.

My 74 had the original on facing timing side. It had never been off.

74 faces timing side, 72 Combat faces Drive side.
Both appear to be original..

Do 750's face one way, 850's the other?

Edited: Both read from the timing side, with the 72 offset to the timing and the 74 offset to the primary.

Why pay $38 from that flake when they cost well under $10 from AN.
The plate you show is the same as the 1971 plate even though your plate looks to be for a 1972 built late 1971 (so perhaps they used the 1971 plate until the new year.

thanks for the link
I guess I missed it the first time .
I will order a couple

In case you don’t know. AN will stamp it for you with your number if you ask them.

As for drilling the nail screws are pretty hard better to take off their heads and drift them through if you cannot
grab them and unwind.
