Hi all just wondering wheather to use the base gasket on the cylinder base or just use gasket goo for a 750 Commando, in the workshop manual it says to disregard the gasket on the 750, so what does others do, goo or gasket with goo, going to drop the cylinders onto the pistons today.

Sans base plate or gasket makes for a bit tighter/stable one less seam to seal but does alter the push rod length for rocker on stem geometry though both my Combats worked w/o stem or valve wear-clash issues. Makes a slightly deeper crisper exhaust note on a tad more CR but may be my imagination. Next question is what to seal in the special propoerly specific oil ya finally selected.

I have decided to go without the gasket, both my workshop manuals say to discard the gasket and one of them is the factory workshop manual, I have used the Yammy bond on the C/Cs and will use it to seal the cylinder base, this motor will not see to many mile in a years as my mate is a seaman and is away for 6 weeks on and 6 weeks off, he also has a collection of older Triumphs to ride as well.

I always use dry gaskets without any problem. They didn't use any Goo at the factory did they?

I used dry gaskets on my trans rebuild a couple weeks ago and it hasn't leaked a drop.
Of course others may have problems with poor mating surfaces that require goo.

I use a gasket on my 850, but on the 750s with out the 4 big allen head bolts under the head, my workshop manual say to disregard the gasket and to just use non hardening goo because there is movement between the C/Cs and the cylinders from vibrations which over time will damage the gasket, using non hardening goo will move with the motor.

Any way I have the cylinders on the motor now and all budded down well and only time will tell now.

Yes they did use a gasket at the factory, but after a few years this problem surfaced and upgraded the workshop manuals to recomend using just the non hardening goo.
