crankcase gasket sealant

Is it possible you have over tensioned the timing chain? Maybe disconnect it and see if the crank spins then.
 
Well third time lucky. Crankshaft is spinning freely now. I checked all of the things that were suggested and they seemed to be okay. Maybe I just had the case wedged a bit sideways during install. On the upside the build continues...thanks for all of the trouble shooting tips.

By the way, if you have the clutch in pieces, you may want to increase the size of the holes in the outside of the centre hub. I think there are 4 or 5 sets of three. I think @Stu Bodycote increases them by 1mm. It aids oil getting onto the clutch plates.
