Starting the reassembly process after splitting the crank case on my 2016 961 MK II. Manual calls for Three bond liquid gasket sealant...looks like there are several versions of this available. Anyone have strong opinions on best sealant to use. I do have permatex right stuff, would that work? thanks Ken

I don't have a strong opinion , only that you should use some kind of sealant on it. I used Permatex high torque RTV (grey color) on mine.

Threebond 1184 is industry standard.

Also sold as Yamabond 4, Suzuki, Honda, etc

May I ask why you are rebuilding it? (Or should I say why you had to strip it).
Hi Cliffa , Do you remember when I had mine rebuilt ? The only problem I had was worry , no engine issues.

961 Paranoia.
I get it when ever a customer rides his bike away....I fret for little reason. I think it stems from where I once did an absolute shit load of work on an SS....it was perfect after. Customer came down for it, and it broke down right outside my house. Side stand switch failed. Good timing at least.

After 6 years of having my throttle hand go numb, I decided to track down the vibration. Ordered a new balance shaft, sent it to Dave Coote and it was out 4 degrees

Thanks for the reply. So what was the solution, add weight to the shaft, and grind it back? 0ut of interest, did you get it from Ollie, or TVS Norton?

yes, ground off one lobe. The balance shaft was from Ollie, and he did suggest it would be a good idea to check it. Very glad Dave Coote was able to take care of that. Tried for months to find someone in the Seattle area to look at it, and got turned down by every machine shop and motorcycle repair facility. Extremely grateful for this forum!

Thanks for the feedback, it seems like the same issue was fixed by bushman in this thread…

Should there also be a fiber gasket for the crankcase as well? I put it together with the Three bond but the crankshaft is not spinning feely enough. Took it apart and rechecked everything. Put it back together but still not spinning feely. Zero endplay so made me think maybe I need a fiber gasket.

As far as I’m aware there is no gasket between the crankcase halves, only sealant.
Have you teplaced any bearings, or made any other changes?

Are you sure there are no shims on the main bearings?
Sometimes inside the inner on the crankshaft (I personally think this is a bad idea)
Also check between the outer and the crankcase. Have you dropped those outer shells out?
If your bearings are tight without shimming then you have rarity.
Cheers

No gasket between the halves . Did you get the dowels in place on the crankcase ? The crankshaft center bearing is bolted to the the inner half so not much end play. The crankshaft spins free until you put the halves together ? What did you replace , Just the balance shaft ? Are you spining just the crankshaft ? Do all bearings spin free ? Try putting your old balance shaft in to see if it improves.

Great advice👍

Thanks for the replies, only the balance shaft was replaced. No new bearings or seals...they were still good (confirmed by experienced mechanic). New balance shaft spins freely also with the left half of the crankcase bolted on. Dowels in place. I am spinning the crankshaft with the camshaft, but prior to removal the crank would drop freely due to endweights and does not do that now. I will keep investigating. I admit inexperience, but appreciate the advice.
