Cracked valve guide bore head repair - is it for real?
 
Agreed. Or someone pretty damned good with TIG. Pretty small stuff... square wave & mini torch for the TIG. Burn through at the ends.
 
When I was doing my city & guild's welding back in the 70s there were some BOC blokes there that could tig weld aluminium foil also razor blades etc
Christ knows how they did it , sheet metal to me is 1/4 " plate!
 
I am not sure but I seem to recall the person who posted it claimed he did it with a tig welder
 
Those square wave machines can go down to an amp or so & the foot pedal gives excellent control. There's mini torches with small electrodes for those tight difficult spots. Good experienced welders can do things which can boggle the mind sometimes, but the laser is straight out of Buck Rogers. The biggest problem with the exotics is keeping the oxygen & other contaminants away.
 
If you have a CNC laser you can shield nicely as you don’t need to be able to see the seam.
 
I have a custom knifemaker friend that can do tiny welds with his TIG machine. Dude is a WELDER, not a grinder.

...although he has designed and used to sell several different belt grinders...

(funny thing, there is no welding in ANY of his knives)

By skill and expertise and a very good TIG welder !

yes they can do it. valve guide crack fixed for me and push rod tunnel. also crank case main bearing lip which was destroyed. built up and repaired.
 
Who in the US can do this laser welding in deep tight spaces like a guide bore etc? I need some for building up the intake port floor.

This would open up a whole new ball game if you can get it done this way!
