I see your point for the chain but.... if you lube the small chain, is there not a chance that the oil/grease will end up on the belt? If you do not lube it, how the chain will react with the clutch/belt dust getting on it?
Philippe

With the right lube, nothing will go on the belt and again with the right lube, nothing will stick to it. On bicycles, we used wax based lubes, once the carrier has evaporated, the wax is left behind to lubricate and since it is not tacky like oil and grease, nothing sticks to it.

I have a MK-III on which the upgraded estart works quite reliably. The motor stator was replaced with a 4 pole version from a Harley & the plain bearing upgraded to a needle type, the cables were upsized and the battery upgraded. Cranks every try.

Any other approach becomes a major engineering project.

The Alton starter is really made for the Nortons without a starter (95% of them :?: :?: )

For people who like their aluminium shiny, Alton is presently thinking of offering a polished inner chaincase as an option.

Commando starter upgrade

Hervé and I will be at the Empire rally tomorrow until saturday with the bike on which the starter was installed, no need for thumb training, anyone can start a Norton with one of those

I have just been informed that The Motorcycle Restoration Company (UK) now has the Alton starter kit in stock - price 1600 euros (£1409 GBP)+VAT (for EU customers). The Motorcycle Restoration Company will fit the kit if required for an additional £140+VAT.

Hi Jeandr
It was a pleasure meeting with you and Herv'e Hamon at the Empire Norton Rally. The E start is real nice and at a reasonable price. This becomes important for keeping your bike rather than selling it and looking for a Mark III. Judging from the average age that was present at the rally this will become a deciding factor when the old leg gets too weak to kick her over. The Q/A tech talk about the system was great with Jim Comstock coming over for a good look. I know Jim is in the development stages for a Kick-start set up as well. I would like to see a report on this system after a couple of years of use to see how they hold up.
Cheers

I also witnessed this Estart system at the Empire rally. Herve drained the oil from the primary and removed its cover to give all present a view of the whole mechanism. The Bike started flawlessly 3-4 times with the push of a button.

I started it many times and it works every time too. One good thing about it, is that if you want to kick it to life to retain the old bike mystique, you can still do it, but if it stalls in traffic, just pull the clutch and hit the button, you don't have to hunt for neutral and get the kick pedal in position. Clearly a case of having your cake and eating it too

I want one too, I will however try to see if it can work with one of those Shorai Lithium-iron batteries because I have to hide it somewhere.

Warning: imature question follows.

If one is to fit the electric start to the a bike, can a Drouin still be fitted ?, belt or chain ?.

I think so as Drouin was made to fit and clear everything in a 750 and 850 primary case as it simply replaces the stock cover to mount by the center stud only. Its designed to hold chain oil in and I ain't ever heard any mention of it being more leak prone than factory cover. To a man they mention the easier starting and smoother operation so may be a natural for thumb commensorators.
